Agriculture Commission Minutes 03/12/2009
TOWN OF GRANBY
        AGRICULTURAL COMMISSION
MINUTES
March 12, 2009

PRESENT:        Stanley Hayes, Chairman; Jason Bogli, Don Butler, Stephen Hayes, Ann Wilhelm

ABSENT: Michelle Neidermeyer

Chairman Hayes confirmed a quorum and called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

VOTE ON APPROVAL OF PREVIOUS MEETING MINUTES:

ON A MOTION by Ann Wilhelm, seconded by Don Butler, the Commission voted (5-0-0) to approve the minutes of February 12, 2009 as presented.

COMPLETE ARTICLE FOR DRUMMER ABOUT AGRICULTURAL SURVEY AND FURTHER DISCUSS SURVEY PROCESS

  • Ms. Neidermeyer completed and submitted an article regarding the survey for the April issue of The Drummer.
  • Once the article comes out, flyers regarding the Agricultural Survey, and where to find it, will be distributed around Town.
  • The informational cards regarding the survey will be brought to Salmon Brook Veterinary Hospital.
  • Ms. Wilhelm will follow up with the Land Trust, Holcomb Farm and the Horse Council to determine if they have e-mail distribution lists in order to send out the flyers and cards.
  • Mr. Stanley Hayes will bring flyers to the health food store.
  • There has been concern from some individuals about completing the survey.  If anyone has questions, let them know they can submit the survey confidentially and the results won’t specify who responded.  The purpose of the survey is to promote Granby as an agricultural and horse community and trying to preserve it as such.
  • A new weekly paper, The Granby News, will be coming out with their first edition on March 20th.  Mr. Stanley Hayes will contact them about submitting an article of an overview of agriculture in town.
The closing date for the survey will be the end of April.

OTHER ITEMS OF INTERST

  • Agricultural Map:  There was a brief discussion regarding the creation of the agricultural map of the Town.   The map will be done once the results of the survey are in.  Some of the questions the Commission will need to discuss are:
  • What is the purpose of the map (i.e., information, coupon book, passport)?
  • What kind of layout would be best (tri-fold brochure, etc.)?
  • Should the map be added to the website to be downloaded?
The Board Members will start collecting different maps/images, etc. to get ideas.  It was also suggested contacting the Granby Artists Association to find out who created their map.

  • Regionalization:  Ms. Wilhelm suggested, at some point in the future, the Commission may want to think about taking a more regional view on agriculture and start looking at working with Simsbury, Suffield, etc.
ADJOURNMENT

ON A MOTION by Stephen Hayes, seconded by Ann Wilhelm, the meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
Recording Secretary
