APPROVAL OF MINUTES 0F 12/14/09:

The minutes of 12/14/09 were reviewed.  ON A MOTION BY Bruce Sullivan, seconded by George Bronsord, the minutes were approved as written.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Ms. Yost reported that the Volunteers of the Month for January are the anonymous donors from Cossitt Library who provide books to the seniors for Christmas.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
  • Ms. Yost reported the Year in Review celebration was cancelled.  This was scheduled for the week between Christmas and New Year’s and there were not enough people signed up to hold the event.
  • There is a soup luncheon and games scheduled for next Wednesday and another scheduled for February.   The purpose is to get people out and to socialize during the winter months.
  • Intergenerational Drumming will be held during the February school vacation.  The program will run from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 16th through Friday, February 19th.   This is funded through a grant from the Granby Educational Foundation.
  • Another exercise program has been added on Sunday morning.  Laura Seger is teaching a yoga class at 9:00 a.m.
  • Tax Assistance will begin in February.
  • Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
  • On behalf of the Senior Club, Marion Stevenson purchased toys and clothing for the children of the family sponsored through the Social Services Holiday Program.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT:

  • Ms. Kielbasa reported she submitted the budget to the Town Manager.  There is a slight increase of approximately $5,000 which is primarily in payroll.  Nothing was reduced and no additional funding was requested.
  • At some point, the flooring in the Community Room needs to be replaced.
  • The large refrigerator in the kitchen is broken and it will cost $2,500 to fix.  The refrigerator is owned by CRT and they are not going to replace it.  CRT had been delivering food on Tuesday only and will now deliver food on Tuesday and Thursday.    We will need to replace the refrigerator but will not be able to purchase another industrial size one.
  • Ms. Kielbasa spoke to the national office regarding reaccreditation.  As long as we submit the paperwork within the next six months, we’re fine and we won’t have to re-apply.  There will be a meeting next Tuesday (1/19) at 1:30 p.m. regarding reaccreditation.
  • The YSB conducted the Search Institute Survey at the high school and middle school last year.  A community coalition will be established to look at decreasing substance abuse, primarily alcohol, among our youth.  The YSB would like representation from a senior to serve on the board.  If anyone is interested, please speak to Kerry or Ingrid.  There will be an informational meeting Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m.  There is also a half-day retreat scheduled on January 25th from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:

  • There have not been any additional problems with the new van.
OLD BUSINESS

  • Ms. Hood reported she spoke to an HR representative from The Hartford regarding the possibility of meeting with individuals to discuss caregiver services, etc.  Although this particular individual did not feel the need to hold such a forum, Ms. Hood will continue to look into this with other organizations.

NEW BUSINESS

  • Ms. Muir reported that the VNA has had to make programmatic changes due to budget issues.  The Board voted in December to eliminate the foot care clinic effective March 1, 2010.  The program has been losing money for a number of years.  Key community people are being informed before the letter goes out informing clients.  The VNA will continue to do home visits to the homebound.
  • Ms. Hood inquired about the upcoming budget process.   Ms. Kielbasa stated the Budget Workshop will be March 4th at 6:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room.   It is important to contact the Board of Selectmen prior to the workshop to voice your support and to attend on the 4th.
  • Dr. Barwick held his “Ask the Doctor” program today and the topic of parking lot accidents came up.  The individuals in attendance voiced their concerns regarding various parking lots in town.  Ms. Kielbasa stated that as a group that represents older adults, the Commission can send a letter to the Community Development Director and Planning & Zoning voicing these concerns.
ADJOURNMENT

ON A MOTION BY George Bronsord, seconded by Dr. Barwick, the meeting was adjourned at 2:40 p.m.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, February 8, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
