COMMISSION ON AGING
April 12, 2010
PRESENT: Dr. Peter Barwick, Karen Hood, Neil Kraner, Incy Muir, Bruce Sullivan, Jack Vanderbilt; Staff Present: Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator

Dr. Barwick confirmed a quorum and began the meeting at 1:35 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES 0F 3/8/10:
The minutes of 3/8/10 were reviewed. It was noted that on the second page under Old Business, the Governance Council Sub-Committee should read, "Commission on Aging Strategic Planning Sub-Committee". ON A MOTION BY Bruce Sullivan, seconded by George Bronsord, the Commission voted (6-0-0) to approve the minutes as corrected.
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:
Ms. Yost reported that Patty Chieski has been selected as Volunteer of the Month for March for her assistance with the monthly dinners.
ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:
- Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
- Ms. Yost reported that there is now a new CHOICES counselor, Ken Weissman. He will be available the second Tuesday of the month from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., beginning in May. Individuals should call the Senior Center to make an appointment.
- The VNA has a new Medical Social Worker, James Fox. He is interested in starting a men’s group at the Senior Center and he will introduce himself to the Men's Breakfast Group, possibly in June. Dr. Barwick suggested having Ken Weissman introduce himself to the group, also.
- Ms. Yost reported that both the Men and Women’s Breakfast groups met last week. At the beginning of the Women’s Breakfast, only 19 individuals had scanned their card. Ms. Yost spoke to the group about the importance of using the system and after the breakfast, a total of 59 individuals had signed in and 6 became members. For the Men’s Breakfast group, 34 individuals scanned their cards on their own. Mr. Sullivan suggested Mr. Vanderbilt speak to the Men’s Breakfast group next month about the importance of using the scanner.

- Mr. Sullivan reported there are currently 35 members of the Senior Club.
- Marion Stevenson, the new President, is pushing to get the recipe book done and would like recipes from the members of the Commission.
- The Senior Club will hold a barbeque on June 14 at 12:30 p.m. at the Senior Center.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:
In Ms. Kielbasa's absence, Ms. Yost gave the following report:
- On April 2nd, the CT DOT Operating Grant was submitted. This money offsets the salary for the full-time van driver.
- On April 9th, the NCAAA grant was submitted. The grant is for a total of $4,942 and is used for outreach. It supports the Grandparents Support Group and the Mind Sharpener Program. It will also be used to support the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program which will be held in the fall. There was a brief discussion regarding ways to get more participation in the Mind Sharpener Program. It was suggested to discuss the program at the Men's and Women's Breakfast and show an example of an exercise.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:
- As stated previously, the CT DOT Operating Grant was submitted on April 2nd.
OLD BUSINESS
- Ms. Yost reported she has updated some of the Operation Policy and has also created a handbook to give to individuals when they become members of the Senior Center. She distributed the results of the Participant Survey and will be putting together the results of the van survey for distribution at a later time.
- Ms. Hood gave a brief update on the progress of the Strategic Planning Sub-Committee. Some of their recommendations are as follows: create a policy to address the role of the Commission; create a job description for the members of the Commission; formalize a process regarding reporting to the Board of Selectmen, etc. The group is meeting again this afternoon and they hope to have a plan developed by the end of the month.
- Mr. Vanderbilt distributed a Senior Center Activity Summary for January through April. The summary lists all activities available through the Senior Center and will be used to track the number of individuals who attend each event.
- Ms. Muir inquired about the Granby Library Associations panel discussion for adult children of aging parents to be held this Sunday at First Church. The VNA is on the panel and she was looking for some additional information. Mr. Kraner gave some brief background information on how the event came about.

ADJOURNMENT
ON A MOTION BY George Bronsord, seconded by Jack Vanderbilt, the Commission voted (6-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 2:45 p.m.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, May 10, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.
