VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Nothing to report.
ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:
Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
No report was made because Ms. Yost was absent.
Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
- He distributed the Recipe Subscription Form for the recipe book being created by the seniors.
- It was noted the recipe book must be consistent in the recipe format, like how to type the word tablespoons (T. or TB or Tbs.) or teaspoons (tsp.). It was discussed to create a standardized term page inside the recipe book to cover this subject.
- There has been no new news about the senior refrigerator.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:
Nothing to report.
OLD BUSINESS
- A discussion was held about additional directional signs for the Senior Center. Dr. Barwick will create a draft letter to the Board of Selectmen requesting that directional signs for the Senior Center be posted on the municipal complex roads.
- Duncan Rowles, Granby Library Association (GLA), came to discuss the introductory session “Adult Children of Aging Parents”, which was sponsored by GLA on April 18, 2010. Professional panelists participated in this event, who were Farmington Valley Visitors Nursing Association, Case Management Consultant, LLC, McLean, and Medical Information Management
- A lengthy discussion ensued and some information from the session was distributed, such as suggested reading materials, survey, and a flyer.
- The survey had positive feedback and topics for potential future sessions (Estate Planning and the Probate Process, Health Care System, Home Care Safety, Long Term Care Insure, Final Arrangements, etc.)
- Suggestion to brainstorm with GLA for this joint event and others like this.
- Create a Steering committee to address this matter in more detail. See New Business for participating members.
- Suggested topics to discuss with the Steering Committee are:
- Specialized topics for panel discussions.
- Timing issue for holding sessions, whether it be the summer, fall, or winter, day hours, night hours, weekday, weekend, or all.
- Advertising of events.
- Identifying resources, professional speakers, volunteers, etc.
- Discussion about collaboration within the Farmington Valley Towns and its senior facilities to offer such a program more widely.
- Create and use flow charts for contacts and resources on this type of topic as a possible handout.
- Mr. Rowles plans on sending out e-mail to interested parties, including the Commission on Aging and The Sandwich Generation Team members, to start a Steering Committee in an effort to drum up more audience and resources for holding these types of panel discussion sessions.
Mr. Rowles then left meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
- The following people volunteered to take part in the Steering Committee’s upcoming meeting: Incy Muir, Dr. Peter Barwick, George Bronsord, and Bruce Sullivan.
- It was noted a resource information packet would be a helpful tool in assisting the execution of suggested projects for the Senior Center or Granby Library Association. Helen Decher, newly appointed member, created such a packet for the “Visual Arts” program at the Senior Center and it was well received.
- Suggested to review the Commission on Aging Ordinance periodically to ensure objectives and goals are being met.
- Jack Vanderbilt will announce at Men’s Senior Breakfast the importance of signing in at the door.
- Bruce Sullivan will announce at the Men’s Senior Breakfast the Veteran’s Luncheon on May 19th.
