APPROVAL OF MINUTES 0F 6/14/10:
ON A MOTION BY Bruce Sullivan, seconded by Neil Kraner, the Commission voted (6-0-1) to approve the minutes as written. Helen Decher abstained as she was not present at the meeting.
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:
Ms. Yost reported that Thelma Bugbee is the Volunteer of the Month for June for her help with the meal program. Sandy Miele is the Volunteer of the Month for July for her organization and implementation of the Movie Matinees and Marion Stevenson is the Volunteer of the Month for August for her assistance with the Senior Club cookbook.
ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:
- Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
- Ms. Yost reported that September is National Senior Center Month and there will be a Fall Fun Fair held at the Senior Center on Friday. Fair-type foods such as baked potatoes and apple strudel will be served and entertainment will be provided by T-Bone. Information will be available regarding Senior Center programs in an effort to get more people attending activities that are held at the Center. Although trips continue to have a high level of participation, it continues to be a struggle to get individuals to activities such as educational events, etc.
- Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
- The cookbook has been sent to the publisher and, hopefully, it will be back in time for the craft fair.
- The craft fair will be held on Saturday, October 16th.
- There are presently 23 members of the Senior Club.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:
- The Senior Center was reaccredited for another five years, from August 2010 through July of 2015. Ms. Kielbasa distributed the letter which highlighted the strengths and provided suggestions for the Senior Center. She also thanked Ms. Yost for all the work she did for the reaccreditation.
- Mary Keating inquired about the possibility of a Facebook page for the Senior Center. Ms. Kielbasa explained that right now, social networking sights are blocked through the Town network.
- The newly created ad-hoc committee meets quarterly. They met once so far and will meet again in November. The Movie Matinees, which meet twice a month, was created by this group.
- The large television in the community room no longer works. One of the members heard of this and her family anonymously donated money to buy a new one. The new television was purchased last week.
- Ms. Kielbasa reported that the Senior Center has received many memorial contributions from family members over the past several months. The money is typically used for something that reflects an interest of the individual.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:
- Trips continued to be very popular and a second van was added for many of the trips during September and October.
- Medical appointments have increased quite a bit.
OLD BUSINESS
- Dr. Barwick and Neil Kraner will contact the Town Manager to inquire about obtaining a sign for the complex which would direct individuals to the Senior Center.
NEW BUSINESS
- Bruce Sullivan noted that in the future, we may need to look at acquiring a small van for medical appointments.
ADJOURNMENT
ON A MOTION BY Mary Keating, seconded by Bruce Sullivan, the Commission voted (7-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 2:40 p.m.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.
