Commission on Aging Minutes 12/13/2010
TOWN OF GRANBY
COMMISSION ON AGING
December 13, 2010

PRESENT:        Dr. Peter Barwick, George Bronsord, Helen Decher, Mary Keating, Incy Muir, Bruce Sullivan, Jack Vanderbilt; Staff Present:  Kerry Kielbasa, Director of Human Services; Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator

Dr. Barwick confirmed a quorum and began the meeting at 1:30 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES 0F 9/13/10:

ON A MOTION BY George Bronsord, seconded by Bruce Sullivan, the Commission voted (7-0-0) to approve the minutes as written.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Ms. Yost reported that Ken Weissman, CHOICES counselor, is the volunteer of the month for September.  Shirley Ryan is the volunteer of the month for October for her assistance with the community meal program and Sue Christian is the volunteer of the month for November for her assistance with the Thanksgiving luncheon.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
  • The holiday dinner will be held tomorrow evening.  Presently, there are 90 people signed up to attend.  The Solid Oak Band offered to play for free as they used the Community Room during the summer for rehearsal.
  • Ms. Yost is currently working on the calendar for January and February.  Due to the chance of inclement weather, she doesn’t plan many long distance trips this time of year.  Some of the upcoming events include a trip to the Connecticut Science Center, chair volleyball to be held at the Center, a Valentines luncheon and a White Elephant Party (Yankee swap).
  • Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
  • The craft fair was reasonably successful and raised $1,000.  Some things will be done differently next year to raise attendance, such as additional advertising.
  • As a future project, the group is looking at helping with payment of a new floor in the community room.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:

  • Ms. Kielbasa reported she is in the process of completing the budget proposal and there will be very few changes.
  • Estimates for new flooring in the community room have been obtained.  This will be part of the Capital Budget under Public Works because it is a maintenance item.   The rug will be replaced as putting in tile or wood flooring is too expensive.  Although this probably won’t be feasible for next year, it will get it into the discussion phase.
  • Ms. Kielbasa is on a committee with six other Directors of accredited centers to develop a strategic plan for Senior Centers.   One proposal they are looking at is instead of having an individual person serve as a Municipal Agent, a specific center will provide the service.
  • The National Institute of Senior Centers is looking for more peer reviewers.  Ms. Yost was recommended and she is in the process of completing the paperwork.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:

  • Van #8 is in the Capital Budget for replacement in FY12, although it probably won’t happen until FY13 or 14.
OLD BUSINESS

  • Ms. Yost distributed the November minutes from the Program Activities Committee which meets four times per year.  Their focus is to encourage participation.  They created the Hot Topics discussion group which meets again tomorrow.
  • Neil Kraner comes once a month for a program entitled, “Ask the Attorney” in which individuals make an appointment to meet with him regarding any questions they have, mostly regarding elder law.  He doesn’t give specific advice but provides them with information on how to proceed.
  • Dr. Barwick and Neil Kraner met with the Town Manager regarding the need for a sign on the complex to help individuals find the Senior Center.  They will get more specific information and meet with him again.
  • Jack Vanderbilt distributed a document he had created earlier in the year which documents attendance at all the Senior Center activities and shows which groups are scanning in and which aren’t.  He inquired how the group wants to proceed with this.   It was agreed that the information is very helpful and it would be interesting to do a sample at different times during the year.  Unfortunately, entering the data is very time consuming and the staff does not have the time to take this on.   Mr. Vanderbilt will keep the form and the group may look at this again in the future.
NEW BUSINESS

  • Incy Muir reported that the VNA has signed the paperwork to buy the Granby building and the closing will be by June 11, 2011.  A capital campaign will be launched by March 1st.  They will also be applying for several grants.
ADJOURNMENT

ON A MOTION BY George Bronsord, seconded by Helen Decher, the Commission voted (6-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 2:40 p.m.   It should be noted that Bruce Sullivan excused himself from the meeting early.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 1:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
Recording Secretary
