COMMISSION ON AGING
January 10, 2011

PRESENT:        Dr. Peter Barwick, George Bronsord, Helen Decher, Incy Muir, Neil Kraner, Bruce Sullivan, Jack Vanderbilt; Staff Present:  Kerry Kielbasa, Director of Human Services; Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator

Dr. Barwick confirmed a quorum and began the meeting at 1:33 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES 0F 12/13/10:

ON A MOTION BY Jack Vanderbilt, seconded by Bruce Sullivan, the Commission voted (7-0-0) to approve the minutes of December 13, 2010 as written.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Ms. Yost reported that Katie Baldea is the volunteer of the month for December for her assistance with the holiday dinner.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
  • The Mind Sharpener program will be held again in March.  It will run twice a week for eight weeks and each class is an hour long.
  • The Live Well program will be offered again this spring.  It is a chronic disease self-management program which gives individuals tools to manage their condition.  Ms. Yost attended the training last spring with the Director in Simsbury and although they offered the program last fall, it got very little response and was cancelled.
  • A “summer camp” will be held for a week this summer.  An adventure based activity will be held each day, i.e. kayaking, snorkeling, etc.  It may be decided to hold the activities sporadically over a period of a month instead.
  • Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
  • There are presently 24 members in the Senior Club.
  • There is $4,000 in the account which they hope to use to help with the replacement of the rug in the community room.
  • Cookbook sales have been very successful and have netted over $700 so far.
  • The group would like to hold another fundraiser and they are looking into the possibility of having bingo at the 225th celebration in October.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT:

  • Ms. Kielbasa reported that the budget was submitted.  Department heads were instructed to keep their budget at basically 0%.   The budget had an increase of $4,000 which was for salary increases.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:

  • Transportation statistics remain the same quarter to quarter.
OLD BUSINESS

  • There is now a sign on the complex for the Senior Center/Youth Services building.  It is on the entrance adjacent to the library.  In the spring, the Commission may inquire about the possibility of having a sign on the entrance near the Police Department as well.
NEW BUSINESS

  • Dr. Barwick announced he joined the Granby Library Association.  If they decide to hold more panel discussions, there is now a representative from the Commission on the Association.
  • Ms. Kielbasa reported that the Commission needs to fill the vacancy created by Mary Keating’s resignation.   She contacted Peggy Chapple of the Democratic Committee and asked members of the Commission to think about anyone they know who might be interested in serving on the Commission.
ADJOURNMENT

ON A MOTION BY Neil Kraner, seconded by George Bronsord, the Commission voted (7-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 2:25 p.m.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, February 14, 2011 at 1:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
