APPROVAL OF MINUTES 0F 1/10/11:

ON A MOTION BY ~ Bruce Sullivan, seconded by Jack Vanderbilt, the Commission voted (7-0-0) to approve the minutes of January 10, 2011 as written.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Ms. Yost reported that Johanna Audolensky is the volunteer of the month for February for her continued support of the Senior Center through her feedback and suggestions, serving on the Program Advisory Committee and beautification of the building.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
  • Due to the low response, the Valentine luncheon was cancelled in February.
  • The St. Patrick’s Day luncheon will be held this Friday and so far, there are close to 50 individuals signed up.  Lori Blackburn has volunteered to assist with the luncheon.
  • The Mind Sharpener Program, which was scheduled to begin last week, was cancelled due to the low response.  The program was also cancelled last Fall.  Ms. Yost will continue to recruit for this program.  George Bronsord suggested collaborating with other Towns in order to fill programs and Karen Hood suggested joining other organizations, such as Holcomb Farm.  Lori Blackburn stated Meadowbrook is offering an advanced directive program called Five Wishes.  She will send Ms. Yost the related information.
  • The Live Well Program, which will be held in conjunction with the Simsbury Senior Center, will start on May 10th.
  • There will be a dinner on May 18th to celebrate the building being open for ten years.  Ms. Yost would like to do a timeline of events spanning the past ten years and asked for assistance.  Jack Vanderbilt agreed to look into this.
  • Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
  • The Senior Club presently has a balance of $4,087.63 and has 29 paid members.
  • The group has decided not to hold bingo at the 225th celebration but will have a bulb sale instead.  There will also be a table to sell the remaining cookbooks.  So far, the profit from the sale of the cookbooks is over $820.00.
  • The group’s primary consideration right now is financial assistance with a new floor in the community room.
  • The Club is planning a barbeque for this summer and will serve chicken.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:

  • In Ms. Kielbasa’s absence, no report was given.
  • The budget hearing is tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Meeting room.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:

  • A grant was submitted to the Beverly Foundation which would fund increased hours for a van driver.
  • The DOT grant was submitted this week.
  • Personal care appointments continue to rise.  Medical appointments and trips are consistent.
OLD BUSINESS

  • Karen Hood inquired about the status of the Program Advisory Committee.  Ms. Yost stated they have met three times so far.   The group not only suggests trips and programs but also is instrumental in their implementation.  They began the Hot Topics group which has become quite popular.
  • Although the Commission had discussed a representative attending the Board of Selectmen meeting on a regular basis, it has not gotten off the ground yet.  Bruce Sullivan and Dr. Barwick will continue to work on this.
  • There was a brief discussion regarding continued difficulty getting individuals to scan their cards.
NEW BUSINESS

  • Ms. Yost will occasionally add information regarding 211 (Info Line) to the newsletter so people are aware of the service.
  • Dr. Barwick distributed an article that was given to him by Helen Decher.  It talks about the future of senior centers as Baby Boomers age.
  • It was suggested to publish the names of the movies that will be shown at the Center.  It may bring in more people if they know what is showing.
  • Dr. Barwick suggested putting upcoming events in the Calendar section of The Hartford Courant.
  • Joanne Desrosiers asked if the Senior Center has ever offered anything through local colleges, i.e. classes done at the Center, informational sessions on what is offered, etc.  Ms. Yost explained this has been mentioned occasionally but without any specifics, it is a difficult thing to coordinate.
  • Ms. Yost talked about a documentary, “The Way We Get By”, which is about three seniors in Maine who greet returning soldiers.  The film then goes on to talk about aging individuals and how they’re viewed by society.  The film costs $100 and Ms. Yost asked if the Commission members could view the trailer on line and give her some input.
  • After last month’s meeting, it was learned that the Commission’s by-laws do not specify what constitutes a quorum.  It would then refer back to Roberts Rules which defines a quorum as a majority.
ADJOURNMENT

ON A MOTION BY George Bronsord, seconded by Karen Hood, the Commission voted (7-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 2:40 p.m.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 1:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
