VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:
Ms. Yost reported that the Visiting Nurse Association has been chosen for Volunteer of the Month. It is their 100th year anniversary and they conduct a monthly health clinic at the Senior Center. Next month, Bob Mayo will be selected for all the work he has done for the Senior Club fundraiser.
ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT
a. Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
· Ms. Yost showed the Board the new Senior Center promotional video, “Life Begins in the Center”. Presently, it is being shown on GCTV eight times a day and can also be seen on You Tube. Ms. Yost is also working getting it onto the Senior Center webpage and has contacted Scot Haney in an attempt to get it shown on “Better Connecticut”. Ms. Kielbasa would like the Ambassadors to schedule meetings to show to other groups, i.e. The Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, etc. Rosemary Weber offered to show it to the Newcomers and Dr. Barwick would like to show it to the staff at the doctor’s
office.
· Ms. Yost is working on scheduling activities for November and December. She is also submitting a list of next year’s events (monthly dinners) to be published in the Simsbury Bank calendar.
· An intergenerational program called “Adventures in Living” will begin on Monday, October 20th. It will run from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Monday afternoons for a six-week period.
b. Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
· The bracelets brought in $195 and cost $125.
· The fundraiser will be held on Saturday. There are approximately 20 to 23 vendors, paying $25 per table and the hope is to make $500 on the tables. There will also be a number of items raffled off and a table to sell soup and sandwiches. The Senor van will provide transportation during the day.
· So far, $1,464 has been raised for the van.
· There are 33 members of the Senor Club.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
· Ms. Kielbasa met with the Board of Finance at the end of September for approval of the replacement van.
· Premiere Night was extremely successful and there were a lot of positive comments. Ms. Kielbasa paid special recognition to Ms. Yost for all of her hard work regarding the event. Public Works was also very helpful during the shooting of the video and helping the day of the event. Senator Kissel requested a copy of the video to put on his website.
· Ms. Yost applied for a grant for the “Art is Ageless” program, which was created by Helen Descher who is working on her practicum at St. Joe’s. Artists from the Granby Artist Association are teaching some classes at the Senior Center. Anne Dixon is teaching a beading class, Wendie VanWelie is teaching a digital camera class and Carole Day will teach a watercolor class in February. The instructors are paid and hopefully the grant will cover that.
· There is an upcoming vacancy in the kitchen as Ellie Olin has announced she will be leaving. Interviews were held yesterday (10/13).
· The week before last, interviews were held for a part-time van driver to pick up hours as needed. Unfortunately, none of the candidates passed the interview process. This has been put on hold.
TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR
· Van ridership and miles increased drastically from last year.
· Bob has scheduled several trips that aren’t costly but are very popular, i.e. local picnics, trip to the beach, etc.
