APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 1/12/09
Bruce Sullivan made a clarification to the minutes. During the meeting of 1/12/09, he
reported the Senior Club raised 23% of the cost toward the Senior Van. It should have been 16.4%.
The minutes of 1/12/09 were reviewed. ON A MOTION by George Bronsord, seconded by Mary Keating, the minutes of 1/12/09 were approved as written.
TREASURER’S REPORT
- Ms. Kielbasa reported that the budget hearings haven’t started yet and budget presentations will begin during the first week of March (beginning with department budgets). She doesn’t anticipate any increases and is hoping there are no decreases.
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:
Ms. Yost reported that Helen Hogan will be the Volunteer of the Month for January. Helen volunteers at the monthly dinners and helps to serve and clean up.
ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT
- Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
- Ms. Yost is trying to add more opportunities to get people to come to the Senior Center but these types of programs don’t get much response. Neil Kraner held a Clean Slate program in January and only one person came. A Mobile Mammography program is coming this week. Eight people had signed up and two have cancelled. Traditionally, it has been very difficult to get individuals to attend any programs related to health or financial issues.
- Ms. Yost may try an “Ask the Doctor” series and may make changes to the Mind Aerobics program in an effort to bring people in to the center.
- In March, McLean will present a four part series, “Healthy At Home”, which will include fall prevention and safety in the home. Although it will be presented as a series, individuals don’t need to attend all four workshops.
- Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
- Mr. Sullivan reported that the Senior Club has 26 paid members to date.
- As stated earlier, the Senior Club raised 16.4% of the Town’s portion of the Senior Van.
- The Senior Club will hold a St. Patrick’s Day dinner on March 16th at 5:00 p.m.
The Senior Club will be putting together a cookbook as a fundraiser and they are collecting recipes.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
- The order has been placed for the new van and the total cost will be $54,621. It is a 14-passenger van with one wheelchair placement. There are a few upgrades: a backdoor was added, LED lighting, ultraflooring (non-skid floor), an RL suspension system for a smoother ride and an electric door (which gives the ability to add grab bars for passenger safety). Also, the rear exhaust will be moved to the driver’s side of the vehicle. It will say Granby on the overhead and the phone number will be added also. We should have the van on or around June 30th.
As of today, the State of Connecticut Demand Transportation for the Elderly and Disabled Persons grant, which funds the full-time van driver position, is not in the budget for FY 10 or 11. Ms. Kielbasa sent some testimony to Gloria Mills, CACT, and Diane Stone, Vice President of CASCP, for the public hearing tonight. Ms. Kielbasa pointed out that the demand for medical trips has increased significantly and we will be dramatically affected by this cut. Ms. Kielbasa stressed the importance of contacting State Legislators regarding this issue.
OLD BUSINESS
Dr. Barwick inquired about the search for a new dermatologist. This has been put on hold to determine if there is a need for this service.
NEW BUSINESS
None reported
ADJOURNMENT

The next meeting will be held on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Kane
