TOWN OF GRANBY
COMMISSION ON AGING
MINUTES
April 13, 2009

PRESENT:  Dr. Peter Barwick, Chairman; George Bronsord, Mary Keating, Bruce Sullivan, Jack Vanderbilt, Rosemary Weber;  Staff Present:  Nancy Grakowsky, Transportation Coordinator; KerryAnn Kielbasa, Director of Human Services; Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator

ABSENT:  Karen Hood, Neil Kraner, Incy Muir

Chairman Barwick called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 1:35 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 3/9/09

The minutes of 3/9/09 were reviewed.  Bruce Sullivan noted that the charge for Seniors Helping Seniors was incorrect and should be $19/hour instead of $10.  The individuals who use the service pay Seniors Helping Seniors $19, who in turn, pay their employees $10 an hour.  ON A MOTION by Jack Vanderbilt, seconded by George Bronsord, the minutes of 3/9/09 were approved as corrected.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Ms. Kielbasa suggested the Treasurer’s Report be eliminated from all future meetings as it is no longer relevant.  Originally, the Commission had a Treasurer and its own budget.  The Commission no longer operates that way.  ON A MOTION by Dr. Barwick, seconded by Mary Keating, the Treasurer’s Report will be removed from the agenda for all future meetings.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Ms. Yost reported that the Volunteer of the Month for February is Irma Cruz for her assistance with the congregate meal program.  The Volunteer of the Month for March is Judy Hart, who ran two consecutive sessions of the Creative Sweatshirt workshop.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
  • May is Older Americans Month and various activities will be highlighted during the month.
  • The Veteran’s Luncheon has been moved from May 20th to May 13th.  HealthNet will cover the cost of the entertainment.  Bob Mel will do a show entitled, “Proud to be an American”.  He had been scheduled to perform a Rod Stewart show on April 17th but it has been cancelled as only eight individuals had signed up.
  • The Grandparent/Grandchild Breakfast will be held on April 22nd.  Typically, there are about 120 individuals in attendance.  Les Julian, a children’s singer/songwriter will provide the entertainment.
The program, “Ask the Doctor” with Dr. Barwick has been very well attended.  For May, Ms. Yost has scheduled “Ask the Eye Doctor” with Dr. Russe and an Occupational Therapist will also be coming in May to talk about arthritis.   Ms. Yost will also be talking to Bill Carmon to ask him to speak about funeral planning.

  • Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
  • The Senior Club is still looking for recipes for the cookbook.  They can be given to Ms. Yost.  Mary Pierce has offered to type them.
  • A craft fair will be held again in the fall.  The Club would like to raise money for carports for the vans.  Ms. Kielbasa will speak to Jamie Klase at Public Works regarding this.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT

  • Ms. Kielbasa reported that two grants were submitted on April 3rd.  One to the NCAAA for under $5,000, which pays for Outreach efforts and the Grandparents Support Group.   The CT DOT Transportation Grant was submitted to CRCOG.  This was not originally in the State budget but has made it to the Appropriations Committee.  Ms. Kielbasa asked the Commission members to contact their legislators to ask for support of this bill.
  • Ms. Kielbasa stated she is in preliminary talks with NCAAA regarding an evidenced-based exercise program called Enhanced Fitness, which is based out of Senior Services in Seattle.  Two sessions of the program are run per year.  It is for adults, 60 years of age and older and it is recommended for individuals who haven’t exercised before.  Participants will be evaluated throughout the session and the information is sent to Seattle for processing.   In order to maintain our accreditation, we will need to offer an evidenced-based program eventually.  NCAAA would be funding the program with minimal start-up costs for the Town.
  • The RFPS are out for the Granby Community Fund.  Ms. Kielbasa will ask for $4,000 to offset the cost of gas for the vans.  We need someone for the Community Fund Board if anyone has any suggestions.
  • The public hearing on the budget is tonight at 7:00 p.m.  The referendum will be held on the 27th at the high school.
Ms. Kielbasa sent a letter of intent to the National Center of Senior Centers regarding renewing our accreditation.  Karen Hood has begun researching marketing plans and looking at other centers.
The new database (myseniorcenter.com) will be up and running in May.  We will start slowly with one group at a time.
