COMMISSION ON AGING
MINUTES
May 11, 2009


PRESENT:  George Bronsord, Karen Hood, Mary Keating, Neil Kraner, Incy Muir, Bruce Sullivan, Jack Vanderbilt; Staff Present:  KerryAnn Kielbasa, Director of Human Services

ABSENT:  Dr. Peter Barwick, Chairman; Rosemarie Weber; Staff Absent:  Nancy Grakowsky, Transportation Coordinator, Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator


In Dr. Barwick’s absence, Karen Hood volunteered to run the meeting.  Ms. Hood called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 1:40 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 4/11/09

The minutes of 4/11/09 were reviewed.  ON A MOTION by Bruce Sullivan, seconded by Mary Keating, the minutes of 4/11/09 were approved as written.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Ms. Kielbasa reported that the Volunteer of the Month for April is the AARP Tax Group for their assistance with the Tax Program.  The Volunteer of the Month for May will be Dr. Barwick for his participation in the “Ask the Doctor” program.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
In Ms. Yost’s absence, Ms. Kielbasa gave the following report:

  • The Veteran’s Luncheon will be held this Wednesday.  It is free for Veteran’s and $4.00 for guests.  Bob Mel will provide the entertainment.
  • There will be an ice cream social next Wednesday in honor of Older Americans Month and we will also introduce the myseniorcenter database.
  • There was a trip today to watch the filming of “Better CT”.
  • On Saturday, there will be a trip to Hammonasset for the Kite Festival and in June, there will be a trip to the Log Cabin.
  • Next month’s dinner will be a Polynesian Luau.
  • The program, “Ask the Doctor” with Dr. Barwick was very successful.  A similar program on arthritis will be rescheduled as the speaker had a conflict.  
  • Bill Carmen will host a program in June entitled, “What to Know Before You Go” regarding funeral planning.
  • The Men and Women Breakfasts will be held again in June and then will break for the months of July and August.  
  • This week there was a hike at Mount Norwottock near South Hadley.  The group missed a trail marker and took a wrong turn.  As a result, the hike took much longer than originally expected.   Ms. Yost contacted the Park Ranger who was aware the group was on the trail.  All participants were contacted the next day and everyone was fine.  For future hikes, extra snacks and water will be provided and if possible, the Park Ranger will be notified when the group arrives.
  • Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
  • The Senior Club is purchasing a refrigerator for the Senior Center kitchen to replace the one that is broken.
  • The group is talking about possibly scheduling a barbeque next month.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT

  • Sandy gave a presentation to NCAAA last week regarding the Outreach Program and the Grandparent’s Group.
  • A small grant request was submitted to the Granby Education Foundation for a drumming program.
  • Ms. Kielbasa gave a presentation to the Granby Community Fund for $4,000 for gasoline expenses.
  • The Town Budget did not pass.  At this point, there aren’t any ramifications for our budget.
TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR

  • Medical appointments have continued to be very steady.
  • The new van should come in July.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m. ON A MOTION by Bruce Sullivan, seconded by George Bronsord.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, June 8, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.
