COMMISSION ON AGING
MINUTES
June 8, 2009


PRESENT:  Dr. Peter Barwick, Chairman; George Bronsord, Karen Hood, Mary Keating, Incy Muir, Bruce Sullivan, Jack Vanderbilt; Staff Present:  Nancy Grakowsky, Transportation Coordinator; KerryAnn Kielbasa, Director of Human Services; Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator

ABSENT:  Neil Kraner, Rosemarie Weber

APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 5/11/09

The minutes of 5/11/09 were reviewed.  ON A MOTION by George Bronsord, seconded by Jack Vanderbilt, the minutes of 5/11/09 were approved as written.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Dr. Barwick is the Volunteer of the Month for May for his participation in the “Ask the Doctor” series.  Joe Rizzo will be the Volunteer of the Month for June for her participation in the Community Café and the Ice Cream Social.  Rex Kerr will be the Volunteer of the Month for July for his assistance with the Senior Club.  For the month of August, Buzz Hale, Bob Simmons and Henry VanVleck will be recognized for their assistance with the Men’s Breakfast over the past five years.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
  • Ms. Yost is presently working on the summer edition of the Drummer and the newsletter, with emphasis on activities to be held in the building.
  • This past Saturday, there was a trip to Harkness Memorial Park.
  • There will be four trips to the Stanley Park concerts this summer, two in July and two in August.
  • On the third Sunday of the month, Bruce Sullivan takes a group to the Grange dinner in Riverton.
  • Chubb Insurance will provide tickets to the Talcott Mountain Music Festival in Simsbury this summer.  These tickets will only be available to members of the Senior Center.
  • The “Ask the Doctor” series has been a huge success and the next scheduled meeting is for July 6th.
Presently, Ms. Yost is exploring the possibility of holding Zumba classes.
  • The Polynesian Luau is scheduled for next Wednesday, June 17th at 5:00 p.m.  The event will be catered and entertainment will be provided.
  • There will be a summer breakfast on July 15th.
  • Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
  • The Senior Club purchased a refrigerator to replace the one in the kitchen.
  • A barbeque is scheduled for July 17th at noon.
The Club is exploring purchasing a carport for the new van.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

  • The budget passed and there aren’t any cuts in the Senior Center budget.
  • There hasn’t been any word yet on the DOT or NCAAA grants but we should hear within the next couple of weeks.
  • By the end of the month, we should hear from the Granby Education Foundation regarding the intergenerational drumming program.
  • An upcoming project will be to set up committees to review manuals for accreditation.
TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR

  • Although we haven’t heard anything, we’re hoping the new van will be here in mid to late July.
