ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT
- Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
- September is National Senior Center Month. On Wednesday, September 23rd at 5:00 p.m., we will “Celebrate Your Senior Center” with a buffet dinner and entertainment by Tom ‘T-Bone’ Stankus.
Approximately 12 people attended the “Ask the Doctor” program today.
Tomorrow there will be a program entitled, “Connect the Dots” which is on hypertension and diabetes. It is a PowerPoint presentation sponsored by NCOA.
- In October, the dinner event will be a Bavarian Festival held on the 21st.
The AARP Safe Driver course will be offered in October.
- Sandy and Kerry will attend a training in October regarding the New England Cognitive Center’s Mind Sharpener Program. It is an evidenced-based program, which will run twice a week for eight weeks beginning October 20th.
The intergenerational program, “Adventures in Living”, will be offered again in October.
- Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
- The Senior Club will hold a craft fair on November 14th. Although Bill Mayo has stepped down as President of the Senior Club, a number of people have volunteered to help with the fair.
- The new refrigerator was delivered in July.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT/TRANSPORTATION REPORT
- The CT DOT grant is in the State budget but the contract has not come in yet.
- An intergenerational drumming program will be held this fall thanks to a grant from the Granby Education Foundation.
- The new van was delivered in July but hasn’t been on the road a lot yet. It didn’t have a spare tire and there were a few electrical issues that are being looked at. A photo will be taken in October with all the contributors: The Senior Club, The Lions Club and the Granby Community Fund.
- One of the vans is presently being stored at Public Works. The Senior Club would like to provide covers for the vans and Ms. Kielbasa is in discussion with Kirk Severance about it. One of the problems is where to put them.
OLD BUSINESS
None
NEW BUSINESS
- Flu Clinic: Although the flu clinics are scheduled, the State is saying there may be a delay in getting the vaccine.
- H1N1: It has not yet been determined what group will be targeted for the H1N1 vaccine and where it will be administered. The vaccine will be free but will be given by priority as deemed by the CDC.
- Senior Center Reaccreditation: Ms. Kielbasa announced that the Senior Center’s Accreditation expires in February 2010 and the Board needs to decide whether or not to go forward with the reaccreditation process. There are nine different standards that will need to be looked at and approximately seven sub-committees, with a chairman, will need to be created. The process will cost between $1,800 and $2,500 and cannot be done without the help from the Board and the community. ON A MOTION by Bruce Sullivan, seconded by Jack Vanderbilt , the committee voted unanimously (7-0-0) to pursue reaccreditation.
ADJOURNMENT
ON A MOTION by George Bronsord, seconded by Mary Keating, the meeting was adjourned at 2:25 p.m.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
