GUESTS: Jim English, Mary Polci, Frank Zuliani

ABSENT: George Bronsord, Neil Kraner, Rosemarie Weber

APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 9/14/09:

The minutes of 9/14/09 were reviewed.  ON A MOTION by Bruce Sullivan, seconded by Jack Vanderbilt, the minutes of September 14, 2009 were accepted as written.

RE-ACCREDITATION:

Ms. Kielbasa explained the five year accreditation of the Senior Center is coming to a close and we have applied our intent for reaccreditation.    She briefly explained the process.  The next step is the self-assessment process and Commission members were informed their input and participation is crucial.  We will need a diverse committee of individuals.  Once we have a slate of people, a meeting will be held and committees will be formed for different tasks.

There was a discussion on the importance of going through the accreditation process and what it means to the Senior Center.   Ms. Kielbasa explained that it's not a punitive process but a process of evaluation.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Ms. Yost reported that John Latella has been selected as Volunteer of the Month for October for his assistance with putting together stories from residents of Granby for the 225th celebration.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
  • Ms. Yost is presently working on programs for November and December.
  • Adventures in Living, an intergenerational program, will begin next week.  Seniors will work with fourth, fifth and sixth graders once a week after school to explore their differences and similarities.
  • African Drumming, another intergenerational program, will be held in November.  A team of adults will learn drumming techniques and the children will learn dancing.  The Granby Education Council funded this program.
  • The Mind Sharpener program will begin next week.  The program will run twice a week for eight weeks.
  • A Bavarian themed dinner will be held next Wednesday evening.
  • The annual Thanksgiving luncheon will be held next month and there will be a dinner for Christmas.
b.      Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer

  • The Senior Club craft fair will be held on Saturday, November 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • There are presently 37 members in the Senior Club.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:

  • Ms. Kielbasa reported that Kathy has resigned and will be taking a full-time position at Police Services.   Her position has been posted internally and then will be advertised this weekend.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:

  • Ms. Kielbasa reported that trips were down significantly in the quarterly report.  A small number of people not participating greatly affect the numbers.
  • We did get the spare tire for the new van.
  • Once we get the decals for the new van, the photo-op will be scheduled.
NEW BUSINESS:

  • Ms. Hood suggested all members of the Commission get a copy of the old strategic plan and come back with suggestions for the updated plan as this is something that will need to be done for the reaccreditation.
  • Ms. Muir announced that a H1N1 clinic has been scheduled for this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon and will be held at the Senior Center.  It will be for children ages two to four as that is the first priority as set by the CDC.  She also announced that there is a shortage of vaccines for the season flu.  The VNA order 4,500 doses and they're only getting 1,400.  Those 1400 doses are being triaged by priority per the CDC’s determination.  The clinics will be for individuals who are 65 and older.
ADJOURNMENT:

ON A MOTION BY Bruce Sullivan, seconded by Incy Muir, the meeting was adjourned at 2:40 p.m.

The next meeting will be held on November 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
