COMMISSION ON AGING
November 9, 2009

PRESENT:        Dr. Peter Barwick, Chairman; George  Bronsord, Karen Hood, Mary Keating, Neil Kraner,  Incy Muir, Bruce Sullivan, Jack Vanderbilt; Staff Present:  KerryAnn Kielbasa, Director of Human Services, Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator

ABSENT: Rosemarie Weber

APPROVAL OF MINUTES 0F 10/13/09:

The minutes of 10/13/09 were reviewed.  ON A MOTION BY Bruce Sullivan, seconded by Dr. Barwick, the minutes were approved as written.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:

Ms. Yost reported that the Volunteer of the Month for November is Stanley Walczewski for his assistance with collating the newsletter and keeping the group on task.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:

  • Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
  • Ms. Yost reported that many trips have been filling up immediately, resulting in waiting lists.  If waiting lists are exceptionally long, a second trip may be added or a second van is scheduled if one is available.
  • So far, there are 52 individuals signed up for the Thanksgiving luncheon.
  • Mrs. Kibby’s kindergarten class was supposed to come today but the trip was canceled due to the present flu situation.  This event may be rescheduled after the holidays.
  • Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
  • The Senior Club craft fair will be held this Saturday from 9:00 to 4:00 at the Senior Center.  So far, 20 vendors have signed up.  This will be the second year for the craft fair and over $1,100 was made last year.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:

  • Ms. Kielbasa reported that over 40 resumes came in for the Administrative Assistant position.  She hopes to interview six individuals beginning next week.   She may not fill the position until after the holidays as it is difficult to train someone during such a busy time.
  • Social Services is very busy this time of year due to fuel assistance and the approaching holidays.  Ms. Kielbasa reported that as a result, she has not been able to do anything regarding reaccreditation.   She will inquire if we would still be within our guidelines if we submit by February.
  • Ms. Kielbasa and Ms. Yost are presently teaching a Mind Sharpener program which was created by the New England Cognitive Center.  The class runs twice a week for eight weeks and individuals are encouraged to attend every session.  The class began with nine individuals and there are presently eight.  It is not for anyone with any kind of cognitive decline and the exercises become more difficult as the program progresses.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:

  • There have been some difficulties with the new van, i.e. there are times when the doors won’t open.   It has been pulled off the road four times since we got it.
  • Sometimes all three vans are on the road.  Personal care appointments have increased a great deal and rides have increased in general as some people don’t like to drive when it’s dark.
OLD BUSINESS

        None

NEW BUSINESS

  • The VNA is out of the seasonal flu vaccine and there aren’t any more shipments coming in at this time.  If people are looking for the vaccine, encourage them to call their physician.  Also, people should be encouraged to wash their hands and stay home if they’re sick.  They can call the VNA mid to late November to see if they have received any more of the vaccine.
ADJOURNMENT

ON A MOTION BY Jack Vanderbilt, seconded by Bruce Sullivan, the meeting was adjourned at 2:35 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
Recording Secretary
