COMMISSION ON AGING
December 14, 2009
PRESENT: Dr. Peter Barwick, Chairman; George Bronsord, Karen Hood, Mary Keating, Incy Muir, Bruce Sullivan, Jack Vanderbilt; Staff Present: KerryAnn Kielbasa, Director of Human Services, Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
ABSENT: Neil Kraner, Rosemarie Weber
APPROVAL OF MINUTES 0F 11/9/09:
The minutes of 11/9/09 were reviewed. ON A MOTION BY Bruce Sullivan, seconded by George Bronsord, the minutes were approved as written.
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH:
Ms. Yost reported that the Volunteers of the Month for December are Arne and Marcia Kittelson for their assistance with the Thanksgiving Luncheon.
ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REPORT:
- Sandy Yost, Program Coordinator
- Ms. Yost reported that the January/February newsletter is in the process of being completed.
- The holiday dinner will be held Wednesday evening and the Granby Solid Oak Band will provide entertainment.
- An event has been added the week after Christmas. The ‘Year in Review’ will be held at lunchtime on Wednesday, December 30th.
- Due to the possibility of inclement weather, the focus will be on more indoor events for January and February. The soup lunch program will be brought back but instead of speakers, there will be a game for entertainment.
- During the week of the February school vacation, an intergenerational drumming program will be held. This is funded through a grant from the Granby Educational Foundation and will be a cooperative event with the Senior Center and Youth Services.
- Tomorrow is the last class of the Mind Sharpener program. Another session will be offered in the spring.
- Bruce Sullivan, Senior Club Treasurer
- The Senior Club craft fair was very successful and netted over $1,000. Some of the money was used to sponsor a family through the Social Services holiday program.
- Bruce Sullivan acknowledged the great work done by Bob Mayo as former President of the Senior Club and also announced that Marion Stevenson is the new President.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:
- Ms. Kielbasa reported she will soon begin the budget process. There will most likely be 0% increases in the budget.
- The search for a new Administrative Assistant has taken longer than expected. A part-time Floater will fill in this week and the hope is to have someone hired after the first of the year.
- Re-accreditation has been put on the backburner but still plan to meet the February deadline in order to move forward with the process.
TRANSPORTATION REPORT:
- The new van has been in and out of the shop a lot. It appears it may be an electrical problem.
OLD BUSINESS
None
NEW BUSINESS
- Ms. Yost reported that Neil Kraner contacted her regarding a conversation that was held at the Granby Library Association meeting regarding assisting parents with Medicare and difficulty navigating the system. The group talked about developing monthly meetings to discuss issues regarding seniors, services available, etc. Neil suggested they contact the Senior Center and coordinate with staff. The Commission discussed possible ways to get information to people regarding available services. Ms. Hood offered to meet with individuals who are in need of caregiver services to provide information and answer questions. At the next meeting, the Commission will review the Senior Center brochure.
- Dr. Barwick will contact Rosemarie Weber to inquire if she is still interested in remaining on the Commission.

ON A MOTION BY George Bronsord, seconded by Jack Vanderbilt, the meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.
