TOWN OF GRANBY
CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES
February 4, 2010
PRESENT: Mike Lengvarsky, Carolyn Flint, Neil Hornish, and Susan Dwyer
Chairman Lengvarsky called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:39pm
MINUTES:
The minutes from the January 21, 2010 meeting were read.
ON A MOTION by Ms. Flint, seconded by Ms. Dwyer, the minutes were approved on a 3-0-1 vote. Mr. Hornish abstained as he was not present for the January 21, 2010 meeting.
COMMUNITY RESOURCE INVENTORY (CRI):
Ms. Flint wrote up a brief summary of the Wild and Scenic Designation for the CRI. As of February 2010, research for the Wild and Scenic Designation has nearly been completed and Outstanding Resource Values (ORV) have been found in the areas of Geology, Biological Diversity, Recreation, Cultural Landscape, and Water Quality. A management plan has been drafted, and the towns involved are being asked to endorse this Plan. The Plan outlines current local protective regulations and threats and gaps to that protection. If the lower Farmington and Salmon Brook are designated “Wild and Scenic” a coordinating committee of townspeople will be established that will oversee actions along the watercourses. Moreover, federal funds and National Park Service staff help will be given to help protect the ORV’s.
Ms. Flint also shared a map from Mr. Francis Armentano, Community Development Director, of an updated open space map of Granby highlighting the different owners (state, town, land trust, etc).
20% BY 2010 CAMPAIGN:
No new information at this time.
WILD AND SCENIC DESIGNATION:
Chairman Lengvarsky drafted a letter to Ms. Sally Rieger and Ms. Joyce Kennedy Raynes of the Lower Farmington River/Salmon Brook Wild and Scenic Study Committee, which would announce the Commission’s support for the Wild and Scenic Designation if the Commission voted on the backing of the designation.
ON A MOTION by Mr. Neil Hornish, seconded by Ms. Susan Dwyer, the Conservation Commission voted on a 4-0-0 vote to endorse the Wild and Scenic Designation and Management Plan, as currently drafted, for the Lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook.
Chairman Lengvarsky will mail the letter and a copy of the motion to the Wild and Scenic Study Committee.
NEW BUSINESS:
No new business.
ON A MOTION by Ms. Flint, seconded by Mr. Hornish, the Commission voted (4-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 7:59 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Emily Leveille
