Conservation Commission Minutes 05-06-2010
TOWN OF GRANBY
CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES

May 6, 2010

PRESENT: Mike Lengvarsky, Neil Hornish, Joe Zafian, Carolyn Flint, and Shelley Reuben
Chairman Lengvarsky called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:38pm

MINUTES:

The minutes from the April 1, 2010 meeting were read.

ON A MOTION by Ms. Flint, seconded by Ms. Reuben, the minutes were approved on a 5-0-0 vote.

The meeting on April 15, 2010 was unable to confirm a quorum because Chairman Lengvarsky had to make an unexpected trip to Europe.

NATURAL RESOURCE INVENTORY (NRI):

Ms. Reuben presented her section on forest conservation. The Commissioners reviewed the document, and Ms. Reuben plans to tweak the document so that it flows more cohesively. She will present the second draft to the Commission soon.

The Commissioners discussed the NRI overall and decided the focus should not be just on how it will apply to the Planning and Zoning Commission. At this time, the Commission is focusing on taking an inventory of the Town, with the next steps being analysis, and then finally, recommendations.

Ms. Flint commented that the final document should be easily accessible to the public.

Mr. Katan left some information with Chairman Lengvarsky on the Inlands/Wetlands Commission regulations and a document he wrote entitled “Life in a Vernal Pool” for the Commissioners to review. The Commissioners looked through them and were unsure if this was Mr. Katan’s contribution to the NRI.

Mr. Hornish volunteered to take all the sections which have been written so far and format them electronically.

ENERGY TASK FORCE:

The Commission decided to send the mission statement and goals/objectives to First Selectman John Adams for review.

RAIN BARREL EVENT:

Chairman Lengvarsky will email the poster to the Commissioners so that it can be posted throughout Town.

Ms. Reuben suggested the Commission also ask Ms. Aimee Petras if she would be willing to put flyers about the Clean Energy Campaign into the packets of those people who will be picking up their rain barrels on June 12th.

NEW BUSINESS:

Ms. Reuben was able to secure a spot at Celebrate Granby on June 12, 2010 and will be bringing a table to post information about the Clean Energy Campaign. She has also contacted the Agriculture Commission and Farmington River Watershed Association to see if they would like to participate as well.

Chairman Lengvarsky announced that due to work constraints he will be giving up his chairmanship of the Commission. He asked the Commission to consider which Commissioner should replace him in the future.

ON A MOTION by Mr. Hornish, seconded by Ms. Flint, the Commission voted (5-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:27pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Emily Leveille
Recording Secretary
