Conservation Commission Minutes 07/01/2010
TOWN OF GRANBY
CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES
July 1, 2010

PRESENT: Neil Hornish, Shelley Reuben, Joe Zafian, and Carolyn Flint

Chairman Hornish called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:38pm

MINUTES:

The minutes from the June 17, 2010 meeting were read.

ON A MOTION by Ms. Flint, seconded by Ms. Reuben, the minutes were approved on a 3-0-1 vote. Mr. Zafian abstained from voting since he was not at the June 17, 2010 meeting.

NATURAL RESOURCE INVENTORY (NRI):

Mr. Zafian will have a draft on aquifers in Granby ready for the July 15, 2010 Conservation Commission meeting.

Chairman Hornish brought in information from the Working Lands Alliance for Shelley as she writes her section on farmland.

Ms. Flint volunteered to begin writing a summary for the beginning of the NRI.

As Chairman Hornish begins to edit the document, he will also separate out the information that is strictly Granby related from the state-wide information. The Commission agreed that the information about Connecticut in general could be placed in the appendix of the NRI.

Mr. Zafian suggested that a chapter be designated for recommendations, as opposed to having recommendations at the end of each section.

Ms. Flint asked if the Commission would like to include photos in the NRI. Everyone agreed that this would enhance the document, and she will begin collecting and taking photos around Town.

CLEAN ENERGY TASK FORCE:

Much discussion took place in regards to re-wording the goals and mission statement of the Clean Energy Task Force. Ms. Reuben will continue to refine the two documents and email the Commission a draft once she finishes making changes.

Chairman Hornish suggested we begin contacting those who have already shown interest in joining the task force so they are prepared for the Board of Selectman meeting in September. Mr. Zafian suggested asking Mike Guarco, Board of Finance, if he would be interested in joining the task force. Mr. Zafian will speak with Mr. Guarco about this possibility.

RAIN BARREL EVENT:

Ms. Reuben reported that 17 composters and 7 rain barrels were sold at the rain barrel event on June 12, 2010. Ms. Reuben will follow up with Aimee Petras to see if the sales of the barrels are down in other towns as well as Granby, whether the barrels could be delivered as opposed to having pick-up, and if the event could be held at Salmon Brook Park on Granby Day instead of at the Town Hall parking lot.

NEW BUSINESS:

Chairman Hornish may be out of Town for the July 15, 2010 meeting; however, Ms. Reuben will be able to chair that evening.

The first Commission meeting in September will be dedicated to preparing for the Board of Selectman meeting. Ms. Reuben will create a PowerPoint presentation for the event.

The Commission decided to cancel the August 19, 2010 meeting.

ON A MOTION by Ms. Flint, seconded by Ms. Reuben , the Commission voted (4-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:49pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Emily Leveille
Recording Secretary
