Conservation Commission Minutes 09-03-2009
TOWN OF GRANBY

CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES

September 3, 2009

PRESENT: Mike Lengvarsky, Charles Katan, Neil Hornish, Carolyn Flint, Susan Dwyer, Shelley Reuben, and Victoria Mazzei-Stepanov

Chairman Lengvarsky called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:37pm

MINUTES:

The minutes from the August 6, 2009 meeting were read.

ON A MOTION by Ms. Flint, seconded by Ms. Mazzei-Stepanov, the minutes were approved as amended on a 6-0-1 vote. Mr. Katan abstained from voting since he was not in attendance at the August 6, 2009 meeting.

COMMUNITY RESOURCE INVENTORY (CRI):

Mr. Neil Hornish presented his draft on the Open Space and Conservation section of the CRI. Within his section Mr. Hornish discussed how land is conserved within Granby, identified the primary and secondary conservation areas in town, and also wrote a section highlighting the Farmington Valley Biodiversity Study.

Ms. Carolyn Flint suggested Mr. Hornish define the term ‘open space’ because people have differing opinions on what it means.

Chairman Lengvarsky suggested Mr. Hornish write recommendations for the Planning and Zoning Commission and other committees into the section on primary and secondary conservation areas.

20% BY 2010 CAMPAIGN:

Ms. Reuben is currently working on a strategy for the fall to promote the campaign through the school system. She also felt it might be helpful to prioritize or pick one of the town buildings for the placement of the first solar panel. Ms. Reuben also thinks it’s a good idea for the Commission to have a presence at upcoming town events, especially at Holcomb Farm’s fall Taste of Granby event.

Ms. Reuben is also in contact with Beacon Mechanical to schedule a presentation at the Senior Center for sometime in October 2009.

The Commission discussed the response to Ms. Reuben’s article in The Granby Drummer. Ms. Reuben crafted a reply with the help of the Commissioners. It will be submitted for the upcoming edition of The Granby Drummer.

NEW BUSINESS:

Ms. Flint announced that she had been contacted by the Town to be part of an interview for a possible new Commissioner.

Ms. Mazzei-Stepanov announced she will be leaving the Commission at the end of October 2009. Chairmen Lengvarsky and the rest of the Commissioners have enjoyed working with her and wished her success in her future endeavors. Ms. Mazzei-Stepanov noted she has loved working on the Commission but no longer has the time to participate.

Chairman Lengvarsky will submit an article for the upcoming edition of The Granby Drummer to announce the open position.

ON A MOTION by Ms. Reuben, seconded by Mr. Katan, the Commission voted (7-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:46pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Emily Leveille
Recording Secretary
