Conservation Commission Minutes 11-19-2009
TOWN OF GRANBY
Conservation Commission
Minutes
November 19, 2009

PRESENT:        Mike Lengvarsky, Shelley Reuben, Neil Hornish, Susan Dwyer, and Carolyn Flint
GUEST:  Joe Zafian

Chairman Lengvarsky called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:34 p.m.

MINUTES:

The minutes from the October 15, 2009 meeting were reviewed.

ON A MOTION by S. Reuben, seconded by N. Hornish, the minutes of October 15, 2009 were unanimously approved (5-0-0).

COMMUNITY RESOURCE INVENTORY LIST

This list is not yet complete.  Commission members are still looking for detailed guidelines as to what information they should be gathering.  Some new information was gained during this discussion.  It may be beneficial at this time to check with the Planning and Zoning Commission to see if members are on track with the information being collected.  Chairman Lengvarsky will talk with F. Armentano, Director of Community Development, to see if he can attend an upcoming meeting to talk with this Commission regarding the list.  Another thought was that a member of the Granby Land Trust and the Farmington Valley Watershed Association could come and discuss community resources in Granby.

Chairman Lengvarsky stated the need to aggregate the material, focus, and continue with research.  N. Hornish can have the open space revision for the second meeting in December.  C. Flint can possibly have information regarding waterways, etc. for that meeting.  S. Reuben will try to have her information together for the first meeting in December.

20% BY 2010 CAMPAIGN

S. Reuben has given a memo to Town Manager Smith regarding the electricity analysis.  This pertains to solar panels that might be able to be installed on the Town Hall roof and the High School roof.  She has not received a response back yet.  Town support is extremely important for this campaign.

S. Reuben has spoken with someone at Holcomb Farm and Put Brown, Granby Land Trust, to see if a task force can be created to work together on the 20% by 2010 Campaign.  A task force might be a great asset to this campaign.

The Commission discussed meeting with First Selectman John Adams and Fran Armentano to try and gain their support.

S. Reuben shared information about an energy audit she had done at her house.  She explained it cost $75 and will save at least $300 annually.  She felt it was well worth it.

NEW BUSINESS

C. Flint asked about this years CAICW conference, but unfortunately the information was received too late for any members to be able to attend.

Chairman Lengvarsky spoke with guest, Joe Zafian.  He may be interested in becoming a Commission member.  He stated he is an outdoorsman and sees resources as very important and feels they need to be dealt with.  On a career level, he has done energy audits in the past.

S. Reuben asked about possible upcoming ideas for this Commission to address.  She asked, whereas the single stream recycling is working so well, what’s next?  This will be further addressed at the December 3rd meeting.

ADJOURN

ON A MOTION by M. Lengvarsky, seconded by N. Hornish, the commission voted unanimously (5-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:20 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Christian
Acting Recording Secretary
