GRANBY DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
Monday, December 13, 2010
7:00 P.M.
Bud Murtha, Chairman, John Krug, Robert Rome, Ed Guarco, Ken Kuhl and Fran Armentano, Director of Community Development.
Attending from the public was Matt Garrett of 56 Day St South, who was invited to participate in the discussions. Bill and Nancy Ross, owners of the Dutch Iris Inn were also in attendance.
The Commission opened the meeting by welcoming Bill and Nancy to the meeting. All the members were familiar with the Dutch Iris Inn and the Commission had actually toured the Inn prior to the Ross’s ownership. Sidewalks were initially discussed as this was listed as an agenda item. The Commission explained that they have been working on improving sidewalk linkages within the immediate area of the Center and on crosswalks on Hartford Avenue. There is no immediate plan to expand sidewalks south of the Center. There has been discussion of extending sidewalks to Salmon Brook Park, though no funds have been allocated for such an expansion nor has there been an official approval for any such proposal. A significant concern is the cost of maintenance. Members discussed the problem
of the state trucks continually plowing the snow onto the existing sidewalks. There was support for the Town to take on the responsibility of snow removal, rather than the individual homeowners. Bill and Nancy Ross discussed the operation of the Dutch Iris Inn, how they promote it, where the guests come from, occupancy at different times a year, Town features and business that compliment the Inn and more. Commission members commented on how beautiful the Inn was and noted the attractive grounds and the Ross’s meticulous maintenance. The members were delighted with the discussion and asked how the Town might be of future support to the business. Overall the members recognize the Dutch Iris Inn as a valuable local business that benefits both the residential and business community. Bill and Nancy Ross are wonderful, knowledgeable and professional operators who run an excellent business.
The members thought that it might be a good idea to periodically invite other local businesses to the meeting to discuss their operation.
The Commission discussed a variety of local issues and concerns. Ken Kuhl gave an update on the housing market.
Fran reported on the Granby Tire and Auto’s completion of the landscaping plan, the dirt bike appeal to the court, progress on the Clemons Springs and Shepherds Way subdivisions and on the anticipated application for 12 lots on Hartford Avenue at the Granby/East Granby Town line. He also noted a letter the Town received concerning scenic roads, reported on the Housing Rehabilitation program, noted that the Granby Oak had been hit again by a box truck, reported on open space, Canton road sewers and on crosswalks.
The meeting adjourned at 8:58 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Fran Armentano
Acting Recording Secretary
