ON A MOTION by J. Goff, seconded by C. Bressor, the Board voted unanimously (8-0-0) to approve the minutes of the meeting of March 8, 2010 with the above corrections.

  • April 29th, at the Town Hall Meeting Room – Tom Sawyer Book Discussion.
  • Keep it Green book club is for ages six to nine.  This is a series of programs on green topics to be held March 10th and 24th and April 14th and 28th.  Approximately 30 adults and children are attending.
  • On May 5th, Friends of Granby Public Library will start to accept donations of books for the fall book sale.
Bobbie Sullivan stated the Book Sale at Cossitt Library went well and their goal was met.
J. Fox reported that Pat Jennings and Evie Caranchini would be doing a story hour at Holcomb Farm on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m.
J. Fox also reported she has looked into a book drop for Cossitt Library and thinks she has found one that will work.  If not, maybe one could be specially made to fit in this specific area.  L. Lochhead said she had spoken with the Architect for the Cossitt Library renovations and found that the door set up, questioned at the last meeting, is due to code requirements.
In response to the question asked at the March meeting, about different due dates for the box sets of videos, J. Fox stated that it could be changed, but will need to be set up as such.  This can be addressed once Cossitt Library is reopened.

Old Business

Budget Update:  There is a Public Hearing tonight at the High School Auditorium.

Board Vacancies:  There is one (D) vacancy.

Cossitt Improvement Project and Fundraising:  Work has started at Cossitt Library.  J. Fox received a memo, dated April 9, 2010, from James Klase, Director of Public Works, stating that the building was cleaned out and things were placed into storage and the library has temporarily relocated to Holcomb Farm.  The drop ceiling in the children’s floor has been removed and the lower level entrance razed.  The contractor, G. Donovan Associates, Inc., has set and poured the footings for the new support columns.  Town crews excavated the area and worked with the contractor to prep the site.  Support column installation should begin next week.

L. Lochhead said she wrote an article for The Drummer about the renovations and fundraising.  She stated the article was edited and some of the information she provided had been taken out.  Also, a drawing she provided was not printed.  The same article was run in The Granby News in its entirety, with the drawing.  Chairman Lochhead stated she didn’t know at this time if any donations had been received.  J. Fox reported at least one donation, in excess of $500, has been received.  Chairman Lochhead asked for suggestions as to how to approach businesses in town to ask for donations.  One suggestion was to put an ad on GCTV.

Reappointments for 2010:  Bob Donna and Judy Guarco have been sworn in.

Volunteer Recognition Tea:  The date will depend on the completion of the renovations at Cossitt Library.  Maybe the first or third Sunday in October would be good dates.  Conflicting events should be looked at before the date becomes definite.  Bobbie Sullivan said that the Cossitt Fair is held the first weekend in October.

Granby Library Expansion Update:  Bill Kennedy reported to Chairman Lochhead that he had spoken with Town Manager Smith and it seems the expansion, due to budget constraints, is not an active pursuit at this time.

New Business

Chairman Lochhead received a copy of a letter sent from First Selectman John Adams regarding former Board member Marty Council being honored for his service to the Granby Library Board.  This will take place at the Board of Selectman meeting on April 19th.  Anyone interested, may attend.

On Sunday, April 18, 2010, there will be a panel discussion – Adult Children of Aging Parents – at First Church from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Please sign up at the library if you plan to attend.

The next meeting will be Monday, May 10, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.  If it can be arranged, the meeting will be held at Holcomb Farm.  If not, it will be at the Granby Public Library.  Chairman Lochhead encouraged members to visit the library at Holcomb Farm.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
