- Programs are on schedule for the month. Cossitt Library story time (at Holcomb Farm) has started and about 12 children are attending.
- Book discussion at Holcomb Farm, May 18, 2010, A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley.
A grant opportunity from The Hartford Foundation has unexpectedly come about. J. Fox has completed the application. She explained the grant couldn’t be used to substitute for something the town should be supplying. The decision to award this grant will be made by late June. If granted to the Town of Granby, it would fund a position for a person to work 20-hours a week for 45 weeks, specifically for this program.
Old Business
Board Vacancy: There is still one (D) vacancy.
Cossitt Improvement Project and Fundraising: The work at Cossitt Library is progressing. There is a question if the door downstairs should be replaced. The consensus was, probably not because it’s historic. Discussion ensued regarding the front stairs. Apparently they can be replaced as part of this project and a decision needs to be made whether they should remain as they are now, or go straight out. The color and type of materials to be used for the stairs was discussed at length and Mr. Sullivan commented that he hoped the storage area underneath would remain there, as tables are conveniently stored there. It seems that the storage might actually be underneath the porch area and not the stairs. The issue of the uneven sidewalk was mentioned, and it is hoped this will be fixed when the
stairs are done. Also, a leak in the wall in the corner of the porch and the fact that the porch slopes down a bit hopefully will be addressed at this time. J. Fox will speak with James Klase, Director of Public Works and gather more detailed information regarding these issues.
ON A MOTION by R. Donna, seconded by C. Bressor the Board voted unanimously (8-0-0) to recommend to the town that the stairs at Cossitt Library be reconstructed in the present design.
Fundraising – Chairman Lochhead reported that a total of $2,112.66 has been raised to date and there is still a ways to go. Bobbie Sullivan told the Board members that the Friends of the Cossitt Library would like to replace the plantings at the library. They would like to pick out the new plants and pay for this project. The cost is estimated to be at least $1,000.
The Board talked about ways to address people, businesses, and civic groups in town in regard to donations. Perhaps another article in The Drummer and The Granby News would be helpful. One thought is to create a mailing list of businesses and civic groups in town, send a letter explaining the renovation goals, and ask for a donation. Chairman Lochhead asked each Board member to create a list of businesses and civic groups and email it to her. She will put together a master list. L. Blessis volunteered to create a letter to be mailed. Hopefully the mailing can be done by June 15th. Another thought to get the word out, is to create informational posters to be placed around town. Chairman Lochhead will look into the cost of printing and mailing flyers to North Granby
residents.
Volunteer Recognition Tea: A definite date will be decided at the June meeting. Presently, the second or third weekend in October seem to be the best dates. This, of course, depends on the renovation project completion. Bobbie Sullivan commented that once the project is completed, a thorough cleaning of the entire building will be in order before any books can be moved back in. Chairman Lochhead commented that cleaning the building at the end of the project might be part of the project contract. It was reported that there are cracks in the ceiling, which will need to be repaired and painting will need to be done as well.
Granby Library Expansion Update: Nothing to report.
New Business
Chairman Lochhead reminded the Board members that there will not be an August meeting.
Hours of service reductions – this discussion has been tabled to the June meeting. J. Fox said she hopes to have the reduced hours figured out by June 1, 2010.
Chairman Lochhead asked the Board to think of a way to thank Holcomb Farm for their generosity of housing Cossitt Library during the renovations.
The next meeting will be Monday, June 19, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at the Granby Public Library.
Adjournment
ON A MOTION by J. Goff, seconded by J. Guarco, the Board voted unanimously (8-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:38 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
