Library activities reported by Joan Fox:
- Summer programs were successful.
- Cossitt Library Book Sale will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010.
- Public Works is scheduled to move the belongings from Holcomb Farm back to Cossitt Library on Wednesday, September 15th.
- J. Fox reported the library has received some patron fallout due to the cut in hours. Patrons feel library services are now taking too long – for example, restocking the shelves with returned books. They are also commenting about fewer storytimes, at inconvenient times due to the cut in hours. The Board hopes that these patrons will make a point to tell the Selectmen their thoughts. Board members should also mention this to the Selectmen.
- No new volunteers will be added at the libraries for the next six to eight weeks. It’s too time consuming to train these individuals at this time.
- Kathy Sullivan volunteered at the library over the summer while working toward her Girl Scout Silver Award. She held an event to teach how to make note cards with an Iris Folding technique.
Old Business
Cossitt Improvement Project: Work continues to move along, with an end in sight. The stairs look great, the new ceiling looks good, and the inside is being cleaned and put back together. The walkways aren’t done, the lawn looks awful (Mr. & Mrs. Sullivan reported), the landscaping isn’t done yet, and the floor and carpet still need to be cleaned. Discussion ensued regarding drainage issues and if curtain drains have been or are going to be installed around the building. It was asked if and when the Building Inspector and the Fire Marshal will do their inspections. J. Fox will create a list of questions and email them to James Klase, Director of Public Works. She will email his response to the Board members. It was asked if there were any issues with the stored books, like a
musty smell or problems with the glue in the bindings due to the heat in the storage unit. Mr. Sullivan said he hasn’t seen any damage. Whereas Cossitt Library isn’t going to open in mid September as was originally thought, the question came up regarding what should the people who checked out many books, to try to help with the storage of the books, do? The books were checked out with a return date of September 15th. J. Fox will make sure there will be no overdue fines charged for these books, and extensions will be granted or the books could be returned to Granby Public Library. She will put an article in the Granby News about this.
Cossitt Improvement Fundraising: To date $4,528.21 has been raised. The recent mailing to North Granby residents put the donations over the $2,500 mark required for the matching funds from GLA, making for a grand total $8,528.21 (donations received and pledged) Fundraising is still short of the original $15,000 goal. Chairman Lochhead asked for suggestions as to where to go next with fundraising efforts. Local businesses have not been solicited. Possibly, the Chamber of Commerce can help with a list of local businesses to approach and a modified letter sent to the North Granby residents, could be mailed to local businesses. A question was asked regarding if it is necessary to raise the total $15,000. J. Fox will speak with James Klase regarding this matter.
Volunteer Recognition Tea Planning: This event is being postponed to April 2011, due to the renovation project being done at Cossitt Library.
New Business
Cossitt Opening Celebration: The Board would like to have an Open House at Cossitt Library when the improvements are finished. Providing the work is finished, an Open House would be held on Saturday, November 6th, from noon to 3:00 p.m. Cider, apples, and donut holes could be served. The invitation list should include town Boards and Commissions, the Architect involved with this project, Holcomb Farm personnel, Public Works Director and employees, Hartford Foundation, community contributors, etc. J. Goff volunteered to put together a complete list and Board members were asked to help make up the list by emailing their ideas of who should be invited, to Judy.
Proper acknowledgement should be made to Granby Library Association and Holcomb Farm for their efforts with the Cossitt Library Project. Ideas of what should be done will be further discussed.
Terms to Expire: In January 2011 the membership terms for Judy Goff, Lynn Lochhead, and Lisa Blessis will expire. L. Lochhead and J. Goff are requesting reappointment. L. Blessis should let Chairman Lochhead know if she wishes to be reappointed.
The next meeting will be Monday, October 18, 2010 (third Monday in October due to the Columbus Day Holiday) at Granby Public Library.
Chairman Lochhead handed out a proposed schedule of the 2011 meetings to the Board members.
Adjournment
ON A MOTION by J. Goff, seconded by C. Bressor, the Board voted unanimously (5-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:41 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
