Library activities reported by Joan Fox:
- J. Fox reported that interviews were held last week for the part-time Technical Assistant position.
Granby Public Library and Cossitt Library will have a book discussion through the Connecticut Humanities Council in February or March 2011. The book still needs to be chosen.
- An additional Audubon Nature Storytime was scheduled and the featured book will be The Mitten by Jan Brett. Friends of Granby Public Library are sponsoring this.
J. Fox received an email from the Connecticut Library Consortium about a program, which would recruit students who would be the new generation of Librarians. It would involve the students, as interns, working at a library as part of a mentoring program.
The clock at Cossitt Library, which was thought wouldn’t fit over the thermostat, does actually fit. Public Works will hang the clock and portraits in the near future and will look at covers for the alarms.
At Cossitt Library upcoming events include:
- Gingerbread House Contest, December 1st – 8th.
- Table Top Christmas Book Sale, December 4th – 11th
- Christmas Tags – Books for Social Services. These have to be in by December 14th. More information will be published in the Drummer.
- Friends of Granby Public Library have generously donated funds to open the library on Sundays during January, February, and March. This is a one-time donation.
Old Business
Cossitt Project/Fund Raising/Open House: The Open House was Saturday, November 6th. C. Bressor said the turnout was minimal although those who attended seemed to enjoy themselves.
Fund Raising has exceeded $10,000. There is a proposal for use of some of these funds; that being to purchase a book drop box for Cossitt Library. This book drop box would be placed by the entrance to the children’s room. It is about 24” square and holds approximately 130 to 170 items. J. Fox received a price quote of $2,500 but she isn’t sure if this included shipping.
ON A MOTION by J. Goff, seconded by L. Blessis, the Board unanimously approved (5-0-0) to spend up to $3,000, from donations, for a book drop box for Cossitt Library.
J. Fox will make arrangement to obtain the funds and make this purchase.
J. Fox thanked all the Board members for their help with the Cossitt Library Open House.
Budget: There is nothing to report at this time. Board members can contact J. Fox or D. Lydon with any Budget ideas they might have. It is expected to be another difficult year ahead.
Reappointments: Judy Goff and Lynn Lochhead are up for reappointment in January 2011. Each of them should contact their party chairman to let them know they are seeking reappointment for another term.
Board Vacancy: In January 2011 Lisa Blessis’ term will expire and she will not seek reappointment.
New Business
Long Range Plan – Grant Application. J. Fox reported there is a possibility of a Community Assessment Grant, for a maximum of $1,500. If this grant could be obtained, then these funds might be used for a focus group or a survey for the Long Range Plan. The Board agreed this grant should be applied for. It will need to be filed by March 2011. This is a matching grant, and the local match would be 25% of the grant amount awarded. There are some mandatory, online workshops to attend in association with the grant application. These workshops teach how to write the grant application. Acting Chairman Bressor asked J. Goff and P. Jones if they would be available to attend the online workshop. They both said they would consider this. J. Fox will provide them with more information. D. Lydon commented that the Long Range Plan takes about a year to put together and it takes two or more people working on it to achieve the final document. It was noted to remember the Library
Expansion Plans in the Long Range Plan.
Items as identified by meeting attendees: J. Fox reported that several Library staff members attended a CLASS conference. They came back with the idea that they would like to have a marching book cart drill team in the Celebrate 225 years parade in October 2011. Both libraries would be involved.
The next meeting will be Monday, December 13, 2010 at the Granby Public Library.
Adjournment
ON A MOTION by J. Goff, seconded by D. Lydon, the Board voted unanimously (6-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Christian
