Library activities reported by Joan Fox:
  • The book drop for Cossitt Library has arrived and been put in place.
  • C. Bressor is working on an article for the Drummer regarding the re-opening of Cossit Library after the renovations.  The article will include photos, etc.
  • National Library Week is April 10 – 16, 2011.  It was discussed that maybe all overdue books could be returned without having to pay the fine, but donating a food item instead.
  • The Early Literacy Station is in use in the children’s room.  Book Flicks online products is pretty well set up now.  It will be announced in the next edition of the Drummer.
  • The Bear Snores On nature program scheduled for January 12, 2011 has been postponed, due to the expected bad weather.  It has been rescheduled for the following Wednesday, January 19, 2011.
  • Sunday, January 23, 2011, Gail Altschwager of Ocean Fire Reiki, will host an Acupressure Facelift Demo.  This simple, 15 minute routine has been used for over 4,000 years by women of the Chinese court to keep their youthful beauty.
  • The Hunger Games Library Event featuring: The Great Cornucopia Rush, Haymitch's Trivia Challenge, and Peeta's Cupcake Decorating Conte will be a three program series, the first one being held January 30, 2011, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Miss Connecticut Teen USA, Samantha Sojka of North Granby, will be hosting a story time in the near future.
  • Sunday programs are going well.  People seem happy to have the Library open then and approximately 60 people have been using it.
  • The hours worked by Diane Bird, who recently resigned, have been allocated to other employees.
        J. Fox received an email from Kearns School saying they will be having an open house for parents soon.  It is thought that the Library could set up a table there and encourage signup for new library cards.
C. Bressor shared information about a Race to Nowhere film, which will be shown at the Avon High School on January 12th.  She said there’s a $1,800 fee for the license to show this film, and that if Granby were to host a viewing possibly several local groups could donate to this fee.  She will bring back more information to the February meeting.  This will be an Agenda item.

Old Business

Budget:  No new information to report at this time.

Reappointments:  Judy Goff and Lynn Lochhead have requested to be reappointed in January 2011.  Both of them have contacted their party chairman to let them know they are seeking reappointment for another term.

Board Vacancy:  There is one (R) vacancy as of January 2011.  Chairman Lochhead thanked Lisa Blessis for her work as a volunteer on this Board.  A list of possible replacements is being created.

Long Range Plan – Grant Application:  Discussion ensued regarding the Long Range Plan for 2012 - 2017.
  • Volunteers are being sought to serve on the planning committee.  Maybe some of those involved in the December 11, 2006 edition would be interested in volunteering again.  L. Blessis will speak with Donna Wix who was a previous volunteer, to see if she might be interested in helping again.
  • A list of possible volunteer names is being created.  The Friends groups will be approached seeking a volunteer from each group.
  • A timetable needs to be created.
  • The survey, should it be mailed out or done online?  Should it be done before or after the Budget?
  • Focus groups should be set up.
  • What other groups in town do a Long Range Plan?
  • An extension of time may be needed in order to complete this properly.
It was determined that a Board meeting should be scheduled to specifically discuss this plan.  The meeting will be on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 7:00 p.m., at GPL in the large study room.
P. Jones reported she and J. Goff are still working on the grant.

Cossitt Concerns:  Noted, but not a renovation concern, was the fact that the walkways around the building haven’t been shoveled this year and also, a board is missing from the fence in the parking area.
A company called Concrete Creations did the walkway at the main library.  This company will be contacted for an estimate for new walkways at Cossitt Library.  The job should be priced for just making the walkway and for removing the old material and making a new walkway.  Public Works may be able to remove the material from the old walkway.  J. Fox will speak with J. Klase regarding this matter.  Striping on the front steps of the library still needs to be done.  The thought is that Public Works may be waiting for warmer weather.  As for the collection of leaves, water, snow, etc. in the entryway, James Klase, Director of Public Works stated he feels that nothing should be done for about a year to see how this area functions throughout all four seasons.  Then, if it’s determined there is a problem it will be reviewed again to see if changes are appropriate.

New Business

Plaque for Cossitt Library:  Specific wording for the plaque to be placed at Cossitt Library acknowledging The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and others for their contributions to the library renovations was reviewed.  Chairman Lochhead has the detailed version of the wording and she will email it to J. Fox, who in turn will send it on to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving for their approval before the plaque is ordered.

The next meeting will be Monday, February 14, 2011 at Granby Public Library.

Adjournment

ON A MOTION by B. Donna, seconded by C. Bressor, the Board voted unanimously (6-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:58 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Christian
