MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 7, 2004
The public hearing of the Board of Selectmen was called to order by First Selectman John Adams at 7:15 p.m.
PRESENT: John Adams, Ronald Desrosiers, Frank Judice, Sally King, Mark Neumann, and William F. Smith, Jr., Town Manager
First Selectman Adams opened the hearing and read the legal notice as published in the Hartford Courant. The Board of Selectmen had called for a Public Hearing for the purpose of hearing public comment regarding an “Ordinance for Property Tax Exemption for Qualifying Veterans”.
Town Manager Smith stated he received no comments either written or verbal although he had conversations with several veterans, who were in favor of the ordinance. He also indicated the Town Attorney had made some legal modifications to the Ordinance as originally proposed to conform to Charter requirements.
Several veterans and family members of veterans addressed the Board favoring the Ordinance. Additional discussion covered eligibility, the process for adopting the Ordinance, the required application process, the total estimated cost to the town of $15,030, sacrifices made by veterans, the options available to each town, and an explanation of Subdivisions (19 and 22) of section 12-81 of the Connecticut General Statutes.
In conclusion, Town Manager Smith stated he would have the assessor send notification to all veterans already on file and include an application for the additional exemption. Veterans must file for the additional exemption by October 1, 2004 to realize any savings on their next tax bill.
No other public addressed the public hearing, which closed at 7:47 p.m.
