C.  225th Celebration

Chairman Allen reported that:
  • Fireworks companies have been contacted and one company will be coming to check whether Salmon Brook Park meets state guidelines allowing a fireworks display.
  • The $20,000 allotted to the committee by the Board of Selectpersons is just start up money for the 225th Celebration.  The Fundraising Committee continues to investigate several ideas in addition to the upcoming Antiques Appraisal Day (engraved pencils, a calendar and a Monopoly game in which local businesses can sponsor their places on the board).
  • The Events Committee continues to talk with town organizations about what events or projects they might run in conjunction with the 225th Celebration Committee, with the goal of helping the 225th raise funds.
  • The next 225th meeting is Thursday, March 4, 2010.
Kathy Ungerleider updated the Board on the Antiques Appraisal event scheduled for Sunday, March 21 from 1:00 – 4:00PM.
  • Six appraisers, some from CPTV, will do the appraising.
  • People may bring up to 4 items for appraisal:  $5 per item or $15/4 items.
  • A bake sale will be held in conjunction with the appraisal and all are invited to bring their baked goods.
  • Mugs with the special 225th logo, in a choice of 4 colors, will be sold for the first time.  Those purchasing a mug will receive a free coffee fill up. (The mugs will continue to be sold throughout the year.)
Ginny Wutka will decorate the room with quilts.
Flyers have been distributed to local grocery stores and will be put in grocery bags at checkout.
Posters have been put up all over town.
  • The March issue of the Drummer printed a notice of the event at the bottom of its front page and will continue to save that spot for future 225th announcements.

NEW BUSINESS

A.  Program Updates

Mrs. Woodford said she has been working on the Summer Brochure.  Even before the brochure is printed, programs are being placed on the P&R website and in the school digital backpacks as soon as they are finalized.  In addition to those reported last month, other new programs include:
  • Arts & Crafts classes from a group called “Inspireworks”.
  • Dean Godin, GMMS gym teacher and GMHS girls basketball coach, will run a Bears Basketball Camp for girls in July.
  • The special pre-school day camp for ages 3 – 5 will be offered if the schools approve the use of an alternative school (use of Kearns School was denied).

B.  Town Parks Updates

Mrs. Woodford reported that Public Works continues construction of the pavilion at Ahrens Park.  However, she has been told that there will be no drinking water available at Ahrens.

Squire Bressor expressed his disappointment that even though he donated the rope for a “rope fence” from the Route 20 parking lot through the woods to the back soccer fields, Public Works informed him that they are not going forward with that project.  Kathy Ungerleider wondered if it could become an Eagle Scout project.

  • Summer Concerts
Mrs. Woodford announced that the Granby Early Childhood Committee will be sponsoring a puppet show at Salmon Brook Park in July.  They will be handling all the costs.

She informed the Board that another sea theme movie will be shown as the Movie in the Park as Disney won’t release “Pirates of the Caribbean” for rental yet.

She said the McLovins Concert is definitely scheduled for August 5th.

  • Coalition
Mrs. Woodford said she asked Deborah Kulwich to be the P&R representative to the Youth Services Board Coalition, and the Board agreed to have her serve.  Mrs. Woodford explained that the mission of the Coalition is to address the results found in their recent survey and the committee is comprised of representatives from the schools, youth organizations, churches and anyone working with youth.  They will be focusing on 4 or 5 “asset builders” that will help youth know that they live in a caring environment, with the premise that the better they feel about themselves and the “culture” they live in, the less likely they will turn to drugs or alcohol.  The Coalition will be scheduling some youth activities in the future.

OTHER BUSINESS AS NECESSARY

A.  Granby Forum Interview

Chairman Allen told the Board the taping of his interview was postponed until March 26 because of the weather.  In addition to talking about interviewer Sue Regan’s list of questions and his responses (which he composed with Mrs. Woodford), he shared his written responses for Board members to see.
