MINUTES
May 4, 2010
PRESENT: Edward (Ned) Allen, Chairman; Brigid Gunn, Vice Chair; Wayne Chapple, Kathy Ungerleider, and Kay Woodford, Director of Granby Parks & Recreation Department.
Chairman Allen called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:40PM.
MINUTES
ON A MOTION by Wayne Chapple, seconded by Kathy Ungerleider, the Board (4-0-0) approved the minutes of March 2, 2010 as presented.
PUBLIC SESSION
No one appeared before the Board.
OLD BUSINESS
A. GAFLAC
No update.
B. Bath House
Mrs. Woodford reported that the Salmon Brook Park Bath House has a new roof (with “tunnels” as skylights), new sheetrock, and painted walls and floors. In response to a request from Little League, a portion of the interior wall separating the stock room from the kitchen area of the Snack Shack has been removed. It is now possible for Snack Shack workers to bring items directly from the stock room without going outdoors.
C. 225th Celebration
Chairman Allen reported that:
- Refrigerator and car magnets with the 225th logo have arrived as well as the teddy bears wearing shirts with the logo. Extra mugs are on order.
Deborah Kulwich has purchased a canopy, tables and chairs to be used when selling items on Memorial Day, Celebrate Granby and Sounds of Summer concerts.
A letter asking local businesses to become sponsors at various monetary levels is being drafted.
The parade committee is waiting for the route to be approved.
The website is up and available for residents to access.

Kathy Ungerleider reported that approximately $2000.00 was raised at the March Antiques Appraisal Day. Since some people had to wait a long time before getting their items appraised, she suggested getting more appraisers for the next event. She also mentioned that the bake sale held in conjunction with the appraisal was not very successful and she attributes that to there not being many children at the event.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Program Updates
Registrations for summer programs are coming in. Mrs. Woodford said she sent back the Summer Brochure to the printer because pages were out of order and it would need either to be reprinted or taken apart and re-stapled. This means several weeks delay in getting it mailed to residents. However, all programs and registration forms are on the website for residents to download and send in.
Mrs. Woodford reported a conversation with School Facilities Director Santi Camarotti in which he told her that custodial fees may go up from $30/hour to as much as $45/hour. This increase will need to be factored into the cost of recreation programs using school facilities.
B. Town Parks Updates
Mrs. Woodford reported that Public Works continues construction of the pavilion at Ahrens Park. It will contain two bathrooms (but no drinking water), a small area which can be used as a Snack Shack in the future, and a picnic area.
C. Summer Concerts
Mrs. Woodford announced:
- The monetary goal was not reached and that perhaps she will be able to get only one moon bounce.
- The Movie in the Park will be The Goonies.
Pilgrim Covenant Church will be the rain site this year. It has the kitchen attached and is all on one level which will make it easier than using the high school.
P&R Board members should save the date Thursday, July 15 to help serve sundaes.
D. Coalition
Mrs. Woodford reported the executive committee is working on their objectives and has set up subcommittees to address the 4 or 5 “asset builders” identified by their survey results. They meet Mondays from 6:00 – 8:00PM at the Senior Center.

OTHER BUSINESS AS NECESSARY
A. Granby Lacrosse Jamboree
Brigid Gunn said that in spite of the rain, the event was very successful and they received lots of good feedback from the other towns participating. They raised about $4000.00, which will be used to support two $1000.00 scholarships at the high school, as well as donations to Bandit’s Place (Liz Bennett’s animal rescue project) and the Susan Koman Foundation. Brigid said the group might be able to donate some money to make up for the shortfall in the Sounds of Summer money.
B. DOGGS Park
Chairman Allen reported a conversation with DOGGS Park members who are concerned about the safety issues resulting from siblings attending sports events at SBP. They said children are coming into the fenced area thinking they can pet or play with the dogs, some of which are not used to children. Mrs. Woodford will be emailing the leagues, reminding them that children under the age of 8 are not allowed in the park and that children over 8 are supposed to be accompanied by an adult with a dog.
ADJOURNMENT
The next Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 7:30 PM in the Senior Center/Youth Services Building, Activity Room #1. If you are not able to attend please remember to call Mrs. Woodford at 844-5356 or e-mail recreation@granby-ct.gov.
ON A MOTION by Wayne Chapple, seconded by Kathy Ungerleider, the Board voted unanimously (4-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:00PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Pat Ward
