Park & Recreation Board Minutes 07/06/2010
TOWN OF GRANBY
PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
MINUTES
July 6, 2010

PRESENT:  Edward (Ned) Allen, Chairman; Brigid Gunn, Vice Chair; L. Squire Bressor, Suzanne Yucha and Kay Woodford, Director of Granby Parks & Recreation Department.

Chairman Allen called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:38PM.

MINUTES

ON A MOTION by Brigid Gunn, seconded by Suzanne Yucha, the Board unanimously (4-0-0) approved the minutes of June 1, 2010 as presented.

PUBLIC SESSION

No one appeared.

OLD BUSINESS

A.  GAFLAC

No update.

B.  Bath House

Mrs. Woodford reported being contacted by Fran Armentano, Director of Community Development, asking for suggestions for the State’s Steep Grant; she suggested the Bath House Project.  Chairman Allen said he was under the impression that the money being requested was intended to reimburse the town for the improvements made this spring to the existing Bath House and not for the new Bath House.

C.  225th Celebration

Chairman Allen reported that:
  • The next fundraising event is Comedy Night to be held July 24th at Lake Manitook.  Tickets are being sold for $25 per person.  The town fire marshal approved the facility for 150 people.
  • Committee members sold $950 of 225th merchandise at the Chamber of Commerce’s Celebrate Granby event.
Committee members met with Granby Town Manager Bill Smith and Police Chief David Watkins to discuss the parade route for October 1, 2011.  An alternate route starting at Floydville Road and marching north to Salmon Brook Park was proposed and seemed to be more acceptable.

NEW BUSINESS

A.  Program Updates

Mrs. Woodford reported:
  • Day Camp began June 21 and numbers for full day campers are lower than last year; there are about 30 students coming half days after their summer school at Kelly Lane.
  • There have been some staffing issues:  1 counselor quit after the first week, one of the waterfront co-directors resigned because of time conflicts with a second job, and a life guard was let go.
  • Registrations for the BCGS Girls Lacrosse camp and the Chris Corkum Baseball Clinic are low.
  • Feedback from parents about the new Inspireworks program has been very favorable.  This camp had a different focus each day.
  • The Kangaroo Field Hockey Camp for high school girls is full (80) with a waiting list.  Many girls have signed up for the Mystic Field Hockey Fitness Camp as well.
  • Two Basketball camps are offered this year:  one for both boys and girls and the other for girls only.  Registrations for the girls only camp have been slow.
  • The July 6 – 9 Trip Week at camp is full every day.
  • A Chinese language/culture class is being scheduled for this fall.  It will be for grades 3 – 6 and take place at one of the intermediate schools.

B.  Town Parks Updates

Mrs. Woodford said as soon as the picnic tables have been set up, the pavilion at Ahrens Park could be reserved in the same manner as the pavilions at Salmon Brook Park.  She would like to purchase a small “play structure such as an alligator” for young children to climb on for Ahrens Park.  She has approached both UNICO and the GEEC for donations.

Chairman Allen commented that the football field at Ahrens is being irrigated.  Squire Bressor asked about the numbers of people expected at the football games this fall and was told several hundred attended the away games last year.

C.  Summer Concerts

Mrs. Woodford asked for volunteers to help with the Ice Cream Social at the July 15th Movie in the Park event.
  • Suzanne Yucha, Brigid Gunn and Chairman Allen all offered to help serve and to bring their coolers to store the ice cream.
  • Suzanne Yucha offered to transport the food from the Summer House and Mrs. Woodford will get the ice.
  • Suzanne Yucha offered to take care of the sign at the entrance to the park that announces the event.
  • Brigid Gunn, her daughter Cailene, and three others from Granby Bantam Youth Lacrosse will supervise the two moon bounces (one donated by the LAX group and the second by Granby Pharmacy).
Mrs. Woodford has camp staff lined up to direct parking.  She said that Lucy Bowman from Little League will have the Snack Shack open, selling candy and ice cream.

D.  Coalition Update – Deborah Kulwich

Brigid Gunn volunteered to represent the Board in place of Deborah Kulwich.

E.  Volleyball

Mrs. Woodford reported she has investigated running an adult volleyball program.  She said the Middle School has room for only one net.  The High School Community Gym has room for two nets; however the sun coming in the windows would be bad.  The only available time to run the program would be Sunday evening and custodial charges would be 4 hours at $90/hour per night.  In addition, a monitor would need to be paid.  A ten-week program would cost each player about $200.

After discussion, Chairman Allen summed up the Board’s opinion that unless there is definitive interest from a group of people and someone to spearhead the program, an adult volleyball program is not something the Board should pursue.

OTHER BUSINESS AS NECESSARY

  • Talcott Mountain Concerts
Squire Bressor mentioned that in past years Kerry Kielbasa of Social Services had tickets to the Talcott Mountain Concerts for residents, but she no longer gets them.  He inquired whether Mrs. Woodford might be able to obtain them.  She said she will ask Kerry why she no longer has them and determine whether it is something the Park & Recreation Department might do.
