Park & Recreation Board Minutes 10/05/2010
TOWN OF GRANBY
PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
NOTES
October 5, 2010

PRESENT:  Edward (Ned) Allen, Chairman; Brigid Gunn, Vice Chair; Kathy Ungerleider and Kay Woodford, Director of Granby Parks & Recreation Department.

Chairman Allen called the meeting to order at 7:40PM.  There was no quorum.

MINUTES

No action was taken on the minutes of the September 7, 2010 meeting due to the lack of a quorum.

PUBLIC SESSION

No one appeared.

OLD BUSINESS

A.  GAFLAC

No update.

B.  Bath House

Mrs. Woodford reported the State’s STEAP Grant application requesting funds for the Bath House has been approved for $225,000 (although that has not been officially announced).  She said a new design will be needed, as that amount will not cover the existing proposal.

C.  225th Celebration

Chairman Allen reported:
  • All the tickets were sold for the Italian Night fundraiser on October 2 and feedback was very positive.  Town officials Bill Smith, John Adam, Mark Neuman, and Allan Addley helped serve 135 spaghetti dinners.  Fran Armentano, assisted by his wife Lori and Annemarie Winsor of the Building Department, prepared the meal.  All helpers wore the new maroon 225th Celebration aprons.  Corinne Dickerson was the “master organizer” of this event.  Evan McCarthy provided entertainment.
  • Two new items have been added to the 225th merchandise list:  2011 calendars (each month features a different scene by a Granby artist) and the maroon apron.  They are priced at $15.00 each.
The Events Committee will send letters to all town organizations asking for their help.

  • Sponsorship Packets will be mailed soon and while the sale of memorabilia continues to provide funds, these sponsorships are expected to be the largest fundraiser.
  • Ruth Ann Lobo is coordinating activities in the schools that will incorporate the celebration.
  • The events committee will be co-hosting a Valentine’s Day Dance with the Chamber of Commerce.
NEW BUSINESS

A.  Program Updates

Mrs. Woodford reported:
  • The fall Wrestling Clinic was canceled.
  • Twenty students were needed for the fall Chinese Language class and that number was not reached, however the Chinese class has been rescheduled for February 2011.  Flyers announcing the new class have been sent to the PTO president.
  • The 1st pre-school art program has been canceled due to lack of interest.  She has asked the GEEC to come in and talk about running future programs for pre-schoolers.
The Let’s Gogh Art class for intermediate school children may be canceled also.
Both Ski Sundown and Youth Basketball registrations are available on the website and digital backpacks.
The Adult Zumba class will run at Wells Road and Adult Drop-In Basketball has begun.
Trips are going well:  the December NYC Holiday and the King TuT trips are full.  The October NYC and the Virginia Beach/Williamsburg trips will be running and a trip to Mohegan Sun in scheduled for Sunday, November 14.  Red Sox tickets for Fenway are not available yet.

B.  Town Parks Updates

Mrs. Woodford reported:
  • Public Works will be redoing some of the back soccer fields.  The Rovers would like 2 soccer fields at Salmon Brook Park in the spring, and Mrs. Woodford will check with Lacrosse for scheduling.
  • Two varsity football games have taken place at Ahrens Park.  About 300 people attended the first game.  The schools will be providing shuttle buses from the high school and will be paying for police services.  Town manager Bill Smith has sent a letter to all parties detailing the town rules for football events at Ahrens.
  • The Granby/Simsbury Raiders football team was approved for one practice at Ahrens and will need to follow procedures in requesting future use.
  • Fran Armentano informed Mrs. Woodford that environmental sampling will be done in the near future in the Ahrens Park area.

C.  Coalition Update – Brigid Gunn

Brigid Gunn reported:
  • She attended the September meeting and feels there is a good core group very interested in providing alternative activities for youth in Granby.  The group includes a variety of people representing churches, organizations, social services, the schools and the police department.
  • She is on the Events Committee.  A PG-rated “Halloween scary” film produced at Holcomb Farm is one event scheduled for older youth.  The high school is partnering with the film company so the high school drama group can meet with some of the actors and actresses.
  • The group hopes to bring in motivational speakers, however funding at the time is a problem.  Social Services Director Kerryann Kielbasa is applying for a grant.
  • Brigid thinks the P&R Department should continue to think of events for youth.
D.  Ice Skating 2011

Suzanne Yucha was not at the meeting; discussion was postponed.

OTHER BUSINESS AS NECESSARY

  • Writers’ Cafe
Kathy Ungerleider passed out a flyer advertising the Granby Education Foundation’s Writers’ Café event.  She said that Steve Rushin’s talk was very well received and that the next two (children’s author Tony Abbott and adult author David Grann) should be equally interesting.

ADJOURNMENT

The next Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 7:30 PM in the Senior Center/Youth Services Building, Activity Room #1.  If you are not able to attend please remember to call Mrs. Woodford at 860-844-5356 or e-mail recreation@granby-ct.gov.

The meeting adjourned at 8:50PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Ward
Recording Secretary
