Park & Recreation Board Minutes mm/dd/yyyy
TOWN OF GRANBY
PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
MINUTES
November 2, 2010

PRESENT:  Edward (Ned) Allen, Chairman; Brigid Gunn, Vice Chair; L. Squire Bressor, Wayne Chapple, Kathy Ungerleider, Suzanne Yucha and Kay Woodford, Director of Granby Parks & Recreation Department.

Chairman Allen called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:35PM.

MINUTES

ON A MOTION by Squire Bressor, seconded by Kathy Ungerleider, the Board unanimously (6-0-0) approved the minutes of September 7, 2010 as presented.

PUBLIC SESSION

No one appeared.

OLD BUSINESS

A.  GAFLAC

No update.

B.  Bath House

Mrs. Woodford reported the State’s STEAP Grant will provide the town with $250,000 for a new Bath House at Salmon Brook Park.  She shared a brochure and blueprints given to her by Jamie Klase, Supervisor of Public Works, who had contacted a company that specializes in pre-fabricated structures.  The red cedar timber building would be delivered on a truck; the estimated cost is $225,000.  The town would be responsible for putting in the slab foundation, contracting for the actual building of the structure and paying for any interior fixtures and furnishings.
Mrs. Woodford said the next step is to discuss this with the Board of Selectmen, as additional money would be needed.
Kathy Ungerleider asked whether fundraisers might help defray costs but the Board felt that they would conflict with the fundraising being done for the town’s 225th anniversary celebration.

C.  225th Celebration

Chairman Allen reported that:
  • The next committee meeting is Thursday, November 4 and planning is going along nicely.  He commented that there is less than a year before the big event.
  • The events committee is working on activities.
  • The 225th Committee is waiting for the fireworks contract.
Sponsorship letters are to be finalized next week.  The committee is depending on sponsorships to provide most of the funds for the celebration.

  • The parade committee will be meeting next week and interested groups were invited to come and discuss their plans.
NEW BUSINESS

A.  Program Updates

Mrs. Woodford reported:
  • The Adult Ceramics class is being postponed.
  • A new Yoga for Children program is being offered in conjunction with East Granby Recreation.  It begins in December with a parent/child class as well as several classes for preschoolers and grades K – 6.
  • Three Winter Indoor Field Hockey Clinics conducted by HS varsity coach Sandy Mason are scheduled for February and March.
  • The registration period for Ski Sundown is ending.  The Intermediate bus is full but there are a few spaces available on the Middle School/High School bus.  She will be renting a POD for equipment storage.
  • Adult Drop-in Basketball is running at the High School on Mondays and Wednesdays.
  • Youth Basketball 2011 registrations are coming in.
  • Participants tell her the new Zumba class is going well.
  • The December 4th bus for New York City is full and callers are being told to try to get space on the East Granby bus.
The King Tut Exhibit trip is sold out.
  • There is space on the November 14th trip to Mohegan Sun.
Next year’s trip schedule includes:  Boston Flower Show in March, American Museum in April, 1000 Islands in June and Amish Country in October.

B.  Town Parks Updates

Mrs. Woodford reported:
  • Approximately 500 people attended the Homecoming football game at Ahrens Park.  Wayne Chapple commented that there were some parking issues.
  • When asked by Mrs. Woodford about the noise level during football games, a resident near the park said that if you are inside your house there is no problem with noise.
  • The goal posts at Ahrens were damaged sometime during the week of October 11th.
C.  Coalition Update – Brigid Gunn

Brigid Gunn says that the group will be putting together a brochure describing their plans, which can then be used in applying for grants.  She feels the committee has good representatives from the community although she would like to see more parents involved.  The first event, the movie at Holcomb Farm, was not well attended, in part because there were many town events going on that day.  She would like to see the Park & Recreation Board plan an event; Kathy Ungerleider suggested a bowling night.

D.  Ice Skating for 2011

Board member Suzanne Yucha will be coordinating this event, scheduled for 1:00PM on Sunday, January 30, 2011.  Mrs. Woodford will contact Public Works about putting in the ice rink.  Suzanne will go ahead with all the other arrangements following the same plan as last year’s successful event.  Suzanne will supply photographs from last year that Mrs. Woodford could use in preparing an ad for the Drummer.
Suzanne asked whether the 225th Committee will want to coordinate an event with the Ice Skating.  It was suggested maybe the DOGGS would and Mrs. Woodford suggested Suzanne should contact Martha Delaney.

OTHER BUSINESS AS NECESSARY

  • Spirit of Granby
Mrs. Woodford announced the Granby Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club will be holding a special holiday event on Friday, December 3 when the Lions Club Tree Sale begins.  A special tree lighting ceremony will take place at 6:00PM, preceded by a performance by the Granby High School Jazz Band at 5:30PM.  The 5th and 6th Grade Chorus from Kelly Lane School will perform after the tree lighting.  Local businesses will be asked to light small trees outside their storefronts and the Chamber will have its Toy Truck available for residents to make donations.

ADJOURNMENT

The next Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 7:30 PM in the Senior Center/Youth Services Building, Activity Room #1.  If you are not able to attend please remember to call Mrs. Woodford at 860-844-5356 or e-mail recreation@granby-ct.gov.

ON A MOTION by Wayne Chapple, seconded by Suzanne Yucha, the Board voted unanimously (6-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:40PM.

Pat Ward
