Park & Recreation Board Minutes 10/07/2008
TOWN OF GRANBY
PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD
MINUTES
OCTOBER 7, 2008

PRESENT:  Edward (Ned) Allen, Chairman; Brigid Gunn, Kathy Ungerleider, Suzanne Yucha, and Kay Woodford.

Chairman Allen called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 6:55 PM.

MINUTES

ON A MOTION by Suzanne Yucha, seconded by Brigid Gunn, the Board (4-0-0) approved the minutes of September 9, 2008 as presented.

PUBLIC SESSION

No Public came before the Board.
RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATES

A.  Programs

Mrs. Woodford asked the Board’s opinion about purchasing University of Connecticut basketball tickets on consignment.  Suzanne Yucha thought the women’s games against Rutgers or LSU would be good games and that tickets at the Civic Center normally are $22.  She said University of Hartford tickets might be something to consider also.  Chairman Allen suggested talking with Jim Rust about a fundraiser.  Mrs. Woodford will investigate the costs involved and determine whether the project is feasible.

Mrs. Woodford also shared copies of the Department’s September and October/November newsletters describing classes for youth in Art, Cartooning, Ballet, Baby-sitting and the new High Touch High Tech Science Program for kindergarten through 2nd grade.  Parents were told to watch for the Ski Sundown, Bears’ Pre-Season Basketball Clinic and the 2009 Youth Basketball flyers being distributed through the schools.  Two classes for adults and teens were advertised in the newsletters:  Ceramics and Special Occasion Dance.

B.  Salmon Brook Park/Ahrens Park Updates

Salmon Brook Park

Nothing new was discussed.

Ahrens Park

Rose Stone, President of Granby Football, presented that organization’s request for a storage facility at Ahrens Park.  At present there are 43 youth on the team and their helmets and pads are being stored at the high school.  They have practice equipment (dummies, pads and sled) at Ahrens Park in the Public Works garage which they would like to store inside a separate storage facility.

Rose Stone mentioned that the organization had talked previously with Jamie Klase at Public Works and Town Manager William Smith and “both are okay with our proposal.”  The shed would be either 12’ x 24’ or 12’ x 30’ and the same in appearance (style and color) as the other storage facilities at Ahrens Park.  The group has sent a proposal to the Lion’s Club asking that they fund the project ($5800.00 for the 12’ x 30’ shed) as the football organization is unable to cover the costs themselves at this time.

Rose Stone said the football group is quite willing to share the storage space with others.  It would be a Town-owned building and others could use it the other three seasons.  Football would need only half of it off-season; she suggested a wall could be put up and perhaps Lacrosse would want to store equipment there.  Brigid Gunn agreed that keeping the Lacrosse’s paint machine there would be convenient, but that the Granby Youth Lacrosse organization would not be able to add much to fund the project and she would like to see it more conveniently located to the lacrosse field.

Mrs. Woodford showed a map of Ahrens Park on which Jamie Klase indicated where the shed would be placed (backed up to the woods to the side of the present football practice field).  The shed would be set upon a bed of gravel and be portable so it could be moved in the future to another site in accordance with the GAFLAC Committee plans.

Suzanne Yucha asked when the shed would be installed and Rose Stone replied that Jamie Klase had told her it would take a day to get the ground ready and the gravel put down.  She said the shed could be delivered right away.

ON A MOTION by Kathy Ungerleider, seconded by Suzanne Yucha, the Board voted unanimously (4-0-0) to approve the Football organization’s proposal for a storage facility at Ahrens Park.

C.  The GAFLAC

Mrs. Woodford reported the master plan report should be ready this month.

D.  Salmon Brook Park House

Nothing new to report.

PARKS & RECREATION BOARD

A.  225th Celebration

The Park and Recreation Board are hosting an organizational meeting for this event following the regular Board meeting tonight.

B.  Holiday Decorating Contest

Mrs. Woodford passed out the flyer announcing the contest to the public and told the Board she has put it up on the website.  It will also be advertised in the Yankee Flyer and the local Drummer in November and December.  She removed the “Best Use of Snow” category from last year’s contest; other categories remain the same.  The cost of entry has been raised to $20.00.

She also shared her letter to businesses asking for their support by donating either money or gifts to fill the winners’ baskets.  She passed out a list of local businesses to contact and Board members should sign up for the businesses they are willing to visit.  Chairman Allen volunteered to take the Center Shops.  Kathy Ungerleider will be attending the High School’s Shopping Extravaganza and will pass out flyers and letters to the vendors there.  She mentioned that Kearns School is also having a fundraiser for their playground and she is willing to approach those vendors as well.

Mrs. Woodford will make up the packets of flyers & letters for the Board to distribute.

OTHER BUSINESS AS NECESSARY

                No other business.
