D.  2009 Sounds of Summer Concert

Mrs. Woodford said the concert on Thursday, July 16th will encompass everything:  American Legion Barbecue, Lions Club Pizza, P&R Board Ice Cream Social, Antique and Classic Cars, Face Painting, Balloon Sculptures and the performance by Island Rhythm.  Two more businesses will be donating money.  If the weather cooperates and there is no need for custodians at the high school, the money can be used to fund a second concert (Wayne Chapple on Thursday, August 6).

NEW BUSINESS

A.  Program Updates

Mrs. Woodford passed out copies of the blue 2009 Spring & Summer Programming brochures to be mailed to households in Granby, West Granby And North Granby.  Only one item has been changed thus far:  the summer field hockey camp for grades 3 – 8 will be held August 10 – 14.

Mrs. Woodford would like to have online registrations in the near future.  She cited the Challenger Soccer Clinic as an example:  almost all registrations for that program have been done online through the Challenger website.  She said that Tom Tyburski told her that Simsbury offers online registration and 88% of the registrations are done that way.  Tom adds 3% to programs to cover that cost.  Mrs. Woodford thinks that she might be able to give a reduced cost to those who pay cash.

Mrs. Woodford is still attempting to get Red Sox and Yankees tickets.  She is taking wait lists and will be sending out blast e-mails to those who want to be informed when tickets are available.

B.  Town Parks Updates

Mrs. Woodford said she was informed by Public Works that they will be working on a pavilion and bathrooms for Ahrens Park this year.  The funds are coming from the Capital Budget.  She commented that the P&R Board should be informed before changes are made at Ahrens or Salmon Brook Park.

She reported that the slide at the Salmon Brook Park Playscape has been replaced, the floor in Pavilion #4 has new cement, the pond has been dredged, and the Baseball Field #3 is being rebuilt.

When asked about the work being done at the open field by the Gables, Kirk Severance told Mrs. Woodford that they were only removing stumps and they have no plans for anything else.

OTHER BUSINESS AS NECESSARY

A.  Fiddlehead Farms Pony Rides

Louisa Mayock of Fiddlehead Farms will be offering free pony rides on Thursday nights in the little grove by the bathhouse at Salmon Brook Park.  The pony is unshod, so there should be no damage, and the Mayocks will clean up after the pony.  Mrs. Woodford has done a liability form, which parents of those taking the rides must sign.

B.  Route 20 Parking Lot

Public Works informed Mrs. Woodford that the Route 20 Parking lot is about finished.  When they approached an Eagle Scout about doing a trail connecting the lot with the park, he declined.

C.  Town Scavenger Hunt

Squire Bressor asked about having a Town Scavenger as his church did one and it was a lot of fun.  Mrs. Woodford said that the department had one back when the town was holding a winter fest, but that there were not that many people interested.  Chairman Allen suggested that it might be tied into the Town 225th Celebration.

ADJOURNMENT

The next Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 7:30 PM in the Senior Center/Youth Services Building, Activity Room #1.  If you are not able to attend please remember to call Mrs. Woodford at 844-5356 or e-mail recreation@granby-ct.gov.

ON A MOTION by Suzanne Yucha, seconded by Brigid Gunn, the Board voted unanimously (6-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:04PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Ward
Recording Secretary
