Park & Recreation Board Minutes 06/04/2009
TOWN OF GRANBY
225th CELEBRATION
MINUTES
THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 2009

PRESENT:  Parks and Recreation Board Member, Edward (Ned) Allen; Kay Woodford, Recreation Director; Bob Smith, Treasurer; Karen Bledsoe, Secretary; Steve Sessions, People’s United Bank; Anna Vamos, People’s Bank; RuthAnn Lobo, Granby Schools; Martha Delaney, D.O.G.G.S.; Mary Anne Guarco, UNICO; Rita Isaacson, Granby Drummer; Sarah Kindl; Charlie Colton

Chairman Allen called the meeting to order at 7:36 PM

MINUTES: Minutes from the May meeting were read.  There was an error in the spelling of Carol Laun from the Historical Society and Rita Isaacson was misprinted as Ruth Isaacson. Also, under the Review/Suggestion List, it should have said Mary Anne from UNICCO, not Rita.  The minutes were approved with these corrections.

PUBLIC SESSION:

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Parade: No report.

Fund Raising: No report.  Public letter written by Ned Allen asking for support/donations was read and approved by members.  It is to be published in The Drummer.

Fireworks: Martha has found the fireworks to be very costly. Average cost is about $1,000.00 per minute.  She suggested that luminaries might be an alternative if funds are not available.  It was agreed we would like at least 25 minutes of fireworks.

Events:  Deb Cramer and Kathy Ungerleider have joined this committee.
Website-Communications:  Rita has talked with the town and we have approval for a page on the town’s website free of charge.  Paul Burg is interested in designing a web page.
Historical Tour: RuthAnne got an estimated production cost of $2,500.00-3,500.00 from Jim Warnke.  This would be a historical view of the town lasting about ½ hour including about 30 sites with voice-over and music.  The Historical Society has requested that any additional copies of the DVD be donated to the Society.  We will need to find out how much it will cost for thousands of copies and where to get covers made.
NEW BUSINESS/UPDATES:
Carnival: Nothing at this time.
Budget: At this time we have come up with these figures: $2,500.00 for musical entertainment; $25,000.00 for fireworks; $10,000 Publicity; $10,000.00 Parade; $10,000.00 Fund-raising start-up; Plus the cost of the DVD’s.
Celebrate Granby Details: We have a reserved spot at Celebrate Granby.  Kay will help set up; Martha will be there from 9:30-11:30; Karen 11:30-1:30; Bob from 1:30-3:30.  Ned will leave his laptop for the playing of the 200th DVD.  It is our goal to make more people aware of the upcoming celebration and get them involved in the planning of the events.
Review Idea/Suggestion List:
The Chamber is handling the cost of 45 banners, sponsored by local businesses.  Rita will work on a logo.
The Lions are all set to do the Beer Tent and insurance is all set.  They will serve Thomas Hooker Beer.
Charlie suggested storybooks as told by local long-time residents.  It has worked well in a neighboring town.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:58 PM.
NEXT MEETING: Thursday, August 6, 7:30 PM, Room #2 at the Senior/Youth Center.
