TOWN OF GRANBY
PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD
MINUTES
July 7, 2009
PRESENT: Edward (Ned) Allen, Chairman; Brigid Gunn, Vice Chair; L. Squire Bressor, Wayne Chapple, Kathy Ungerleider, Suzanne Yucha, Joe Zafian and Kay Woodford.
Chairman Allen called the meeting to order and confirmed a quorum at 7:34PM.
MINUTES
ON A MOTION by Squire Bressor, seconded by Kathy Ungerleider, the Board (5-0-2) approved the minutes of June 2, 2009 as presented.
PUBLIC SESSION
No one appeared before the Board. Mrs. Woodford reported she has not heard anything concerning the two Eagle Scout projects proposed during the Public Session at the June 2, 2009 meeting (Nick Healy’s Bulletin Board at Ahrens Park and Brian Spurlock’s Storage Building at Ahrens Park).
OLD BUSINESS
A. GAFLAC
Nothing new to report.
B. BATH HOUSE
Mrs. Woodford said the Bathhouse Project is still in the hands of the Selectmen. She does not think the architect’s plan for a building with a boat-shaped roof and side awnings is what is best for the town’s purposes, i.e., an alternate indoor site for Day Camp on rainy days.
C. 225th CELEBRATION
Chairman Allen reported the 225th Committee had a display at the Chamber of Commerce’s Celebrate Granby event and another 25 people signed up to help. No meeting is being held in July, and the August meeting may be moved to Tuesday, August 4th so as not to conflict with the Sounds of Summer concert on August 6th. He believes that with all the new volunteers, the Committee will really move forward in September.

D. 2009 Sounds of Summer Concert
Chairman Allen, Suzanne Yucha, Joe Zafian and Wayne Chapple volunteered to help scoop and ladle toppings for the P&R Board’s ice cream social during the concert on July 16th. Mrs. Woodford will get the ice cream and all ingredients (Suzanne Yucha volunteered to help her if needed) and Suzanne volunteered to return any unused items on Friday.
Because the band Island Rhythm is performing, Mrs. Woodford suggested that Board members might wear Hawaiian shirts. She also said that should any members be available, they could come early at 5:30 to help sell candy etc. in the Snack Shack.
Six SBP counselors will be helping with parking. If it should rain, the concert will be held at the High School Commons and coolers may be needed if she cannot get access to the school’s freezers.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Program Updates
- Mrs. Woodford commented that spring/summer registrations continue to come in and that often people are waiting until the last minute to register for programs.
- The Play-Well Technologies Lego camps we are running with East Granby have almost 30 per session and all the bus trips are doing well.
- She worked for a year to get Kara Wolters to do a Girls Basketball Camp and so far the response is disappointing; she may have to cancel it. Those girls will be told about Kara’s camp in East Longmeadow.
- Adult Zumba classes are growing in popularity and Granby is partnering with East Granby for a summer class.
- The Girls Lacrosse Camp and the Mad Science camps are not doing well and may need to be canceled.
- The half-day SBP Day Camp being held in conjunction with Granby’s Summer School Enrichment program has 12 children involved. Being the first year, it is taking a great deal of organization work. The schools finally agreed to help with the bus cost to bring the 12 children from Kelly Lane to the park; however, the recreation department will take a loss on the cost.
- Soccer registrations are somewhat lower this year.
- Mrs. Woodford was unable to get Yankees tickets although she tried numerous times. Their online site wanted a deposit up front without telling the cost of the ticket or where the seat is located. When she got to a live person, she was told the tickets were $62pp.
- Fall programs are being set up including a new gymnastics program for preschoolers. Returning programs include Zumba and Ballroom Dancing for adults and field hockey and youth wrestling for youth. A Power Volleyball group will be playing on Saturdays in the winter at the High School with the P&R department receiving part of the fees.

B. Town Parks Updates
Chairman Allen asked whether Public Works would be painting the batting cage at Ahrens Park and Mrs. Woodford will check on it.
At the June 2, 2009 meeting Squire Bressor suggested a series of posts with a connecting rope might be an inexpensive way to give people something to hold on to as they negotiate the trail from the Route 20 parking lot to the back fields at SBP. He reported talking to Public Works about it and that a work order had been made but he has not seen any progress on it yet.
Joe Zafian commented that a trash barrel is needed in the community gardens area at Ahrens as plastic pots and other trash is being thrown into the woods. Mrs. Woodford will talk to Public Works about placing a barrel or posting a sign that reminds people to take home whatever they bring in.
OTHER BUSINESS AS NECESSARY
No items were discussed.
ADJOURNMENT
The Board will not meet on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. The next Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 7:30 PM in the Senior Center/Youth Services Building, Activity Room #1. If you are not able to attend please remember to call Mrs. Woodford at 844-5356 or e-mail recreation@granby-ct.gov.
ON A MOTION by Wayne Chapple, seconded by Suzanne Yucha, the Board voted unanimously (7-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 8:34PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Pat Ward
