Youth Service Bureau Advisory Board Minutes 01/13/2010
TOWN OF GRANBY
YOUTH SERVICE BUREAU
Minutes
January 13, 2010

PRESENT:        Donna Snyder, Chairman; Jack Cashman, Ingrid Helander, KerryAnn Kielbasa, Becca Polglase, Linda Pollock, Lisa Venn;  David Watkins, Kay Woodford

Although there was not a quorum present, it was decided to go through the agenda even though no motions and/or votes can be made.

REVIEW OF YSB MISSION STATEMENT

Ms. Snyder read the YSB Mission Statement and stated she felt it was important to clarify the difference between the YSB and the LPC/Coalition.   The YSB is an advisory board to the Youth Services Department, including advocating with our governing bodies (i.e. budget process, etc.) and contributing to the strategic plan for the Coalition.   Not everyone on the YSB is going to want to be a part of the Coalition.   The Coalition is a tactical body and the YSB will assist them by getting information out and getting others involved.

  • Current Opportunity & Expected Participation:
  • YSB members should familiarize themselves with the YSB presentation regarding the Search Institute results so everyone can be an ambassador.  YSB members should think of any organizations they belong to that would be open to a presentation.
  • It is important for YSB members to participate at Board Meetings regarding the budget.
  • There was a brief discussion regarding what can be done to enhance the YSB’s presence in the community and make people more aware of the YSB.   Shirley Ryan volunteered to give a presentation to the Women’s Breakfast.   The YSB may also need to think about new ways to communicate, i.e. Face book, twitter, etc.
  • Youth Services needs more resources in order to grow.  They don’t have a budget; they are a line item under Social Services.   Although the likelihood of an increase in the budget for this year is small, it is something to plan for.  It is a long process and people should not get discouraged.
  • The vision of Youth Services should be part of the strategic plan.  One long-term goal is the need for more space; they need their own building.
YOUTH COUNSELOR REPORT:

  • There will be an intergenerational drumming program offered during the winter break.  It will be held Tuesday through Friday from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. and is being offered through a grant from the Granby Educational Foundation.    The program is for seniors and students in grades 4 through 12.  The students will come Tuesday through Friday and the seniors will come on Thursday and Friday.

YOUTH ACTION COUNCIL:

  • The sixth grade dance, the Penguin Slide, was held in December and there were 140 kids in attendance.   Approximately $780 was raised and will go toward the high school scholarship.
OLD BUSINESS:

  • The Coalition will hold a half-day retreat on January 25th.  They will come up with a name for their group and work on a strategic plan.   YSB members should continue to recruit individuals from the community for the Coalition.
  • Ms. Kielbasa gave a presentation to the Lions Club regarding the Search Institute results.  Once there is a strategic plan, she will go back to them for funding.  She also gave a presentation to the Board of Finance and the Board of Education.
  • Ms. Snyder gave a presentation to the Community Fund.  They would like a copy of the results and some additional information before they move forward with funding.
NEW BUSINESS:

  • Chief Watkins announced that David Bourque has been hired as the new Captain and his first day will be January 25th.  He will be a voting representative of the YSB and will be on the Juvenile Review Board as well.
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 4:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
