REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF LAST MEETING’S MINUTES

ON A MOTION BY Sue Sojka, seconded by Donna Snyder, the Board voted (10-0-0) to accept the minutes of November 12, 2009 as written.

YOUTH ACTION COUNCIL REPORT:

  • The Youth Action Council is moving ahead with Granby Afoot.   Some of the YAC members will be contacting businesses asking for their support of an event that will take place on Saturday, May 8th.   Businesses will be asked to promote the event by displaying posters and will also be asked to provide discounted items for individuals who participate.  T-shirts sponsoring the event can be purchased for $10.  Individuals will walk around town and those wearing t-shirts will received the discounts from participating businesses.   Walkers will also have a map detailing participating  businesses and walkers can specify  areas in town that need sidewalks or areas that are easily accessible.  Linda Pollock announced that Back in Touch will offer free five minute chair massages.  Becca Polglase stated that April 17th is Healthy Kids Day at the Y and YAC could attend to promote the walk.  Sue Sojka volunteered to go with the YAC members to the Y on the 17th.
  • There will be another sixth grade dance in the spring.
OLD BUSINESS:

Updates regarding LPC/Coalition and work with John Daviau:

  • The LPC is developing a strategic plan in response to the survey and they have come up with goals, i.e. recruiting people, targeting assets, etc.  They met on Monday and came up with tasks for their objectives and will meet again on March 15th.  John will meet with them on April 5th.  A copy of the goals and objectives was distributed.  There is still some confusion among members whether they're the council or they're the group developing the council.  Anyone on the YSB can attend these meetings, especially now that they're beginning to work on the activities.
YOUTH COUNSELOR REPORT:

  • Ms. Helander announced they are in the process of interviewing for new interns.  They should have two new interns for next year and both are students from St. Joe's.   They may also get one more practicum level intern.   Grace Talaga and Jamie Noonan will be leaving this summer.
  • Dan Foley who is a part-time staff person is taking an extended leave.  He has been diagnosed with cancer and will being undergoing treatment.
  • The Grandparent Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, April 21st.  Ms. Helander announced that Sandy Yost asked if someone could find entertainment.  Ms. Kielbasa reminded everyone that this is a Youth Services event, not a Senior Center event.    Lisa Venn volunteered to get paper tablecloths for the kids to color on.   Sue Sojka offered to look into hiring a magician.   A sign-up sheet was distributed for different tasks, including assisting during the breakfast.  Becca announced that the Granby Early Education Council is looking to expand their membership committee right now.  Presently, they're focusing on kids up to age 8 and they may be willing to help advertise for the Grandparent Breakfast.  They can send out an announcement to their distribution list.
  • The drumming program that was held over the February break received positive responses from both the kids and the seniors who participated.
  • Both BOW and WOW will be ending in April.
  • Adventures in Living will begin in April and will run for six weeks.   It is an intergenerational program for seniors and kids in 4th through sixth grades.
NEW BUSINESS:

  • Elect/Appoint YSB Co-Chair:   ON A MOTION by Donna Snyder, seconded by Lisa Venn, the board voted (10-0-0) to nominate Laura Snyder as Co-Chair of the YSB.
  • Develop a Strategic Plan for Youth Services:    Kerry distributed copies of the last strategic plan.  Members should bring it to the next meeting so the group can go through it.   It will be a working document that changes over time and should also include who is responsible for tasks.  The purpose is to define goals for the future (i.e. what do we want in five years) and then, how do we fund it?  The group needs to advocate for a budget plan for the YSB, but that may mean looking at grant opportunities since the budget is presently so tight.  People also need to know what their roles are.  Is the Board going to be an action based-board or just a board that people report to?  We will need to create a vision statement and it was also suggested to do an organizational chart.  The purpose of the Advisory Board is to advocate for youth, identify unmet needs and be advisories to Youth Services staff and the Board of Selectmen.
  • Juvenile Review Board:   There is a vacancy on the Juvenile Review Board.  Sue Sojka volunteered to join the Board.
ON A MOTION BY Donna Snyder, seconded by Lisa Venn, the bureau voted (10-0-0) to adjourn.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 4:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
