Minutes
March 9, 2011
PRESENT: Donna Snyder, Chairman; Captain David Bourque, Judi Cosgrove, AnneMarie Cox, Hilary Desideraggio, Michael Garcia, KerryAnn Kielbasa, Linda Pollock, Jeff Rackliff, Shirley Ryan, Laura Snyder, Chief David Watkins, Kay Woodford
Chairman Donna Snyder confirmed a quorum and began the meeting at 3:35 p.m.
REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF LAST MEETING’S MINUTES
ON A MOTION BY AnneMarie Cox, seconded by Michael Garcia, the Board voted (8-0-1) to accept the minutes of February 9, 2011 as written. Because he was not at the February meeting, David Bourque abstained from voting.
GRANBY GPC/COMMUNITY COALITION UPDATE:
- The GPC is in the final stages of completing the Drug-Free Community grant. The budget is done. The group will meet Friday morning to complete the federal paperwork and edit the narrative. The grant is due March 18th and will be mailed by Wednesday, March 16th.
YOUTH COUNSELOR REPORT:
AnneMarie Cox gave the following report:
- The boys group for 6th and 7th graders will begin April 1st.
- WOW has one or two meetings remaining and will be done for the year.
- The Stay ‘n Play group is going very well.
- Counseling referrals are up and the interns’ caseloads are full.
- Ms. Cox will attend the Kindergarten registration tomorrow to distribute brochures and information.
- MADD will be giving a presentation at the Senior Center/Youth Services building on April 7th from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. on ways to initiate and maintain conversations with kids regarding drinking. Ms. Cox will be trained as a presenter so she can give the presentation to various groups over the next year.
- Haze, a documentary about binge drinking on college campuses, has been purchased in conjunction with East Granby Youth Services and support from the Lions Club. Ms. Cox has been speaking to Kathy Sutton at the high school. Some teachers are interested in showing it to their classes and there may also be a showing at the Youth Services building.
YOUTH ACTION COUNCIL REPORT:
- The YAC retreat at the end of February went very well.
- There is a meeting tonight to discuss the spring dance and Granby Afoot.
OLD BUSINESS:
SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Development, Membership and Governance:
- The committee met and began developing a calendar based on timelines in the strategic plan. Events and input from other sub-committees is also needed.
- The committee started putting together interview questions for individuals who participate in YSB programs. Individuals will be surveyed to obtain information on their understanding of the YSB.
Asset Management:
- The sub-committee met yesterday to discuss ways to begin working on the cultural competency asset. Five Open Choice families and five Granby families will be interviewed to get their input as to what’s missing and what’s working in regard to cultural competency.
- Ms. Cox will give a list of programs she’s running to the sub-committee so they can begin looking at small ways to incorporate cultural competency into the groups, i.e. use books depicting various cultures with the Stay ‘n Play group, etc.
Marketing & Publicity:
- The Facebook page is up and running. Jeff Rackliff would like more administrative rights and will meet with Ms. Cox who is the administrator.
- The YSB logo will be put on the bulletin board at the middle school to make more people aware of the group.
ON A MOTION BY Shirley Ryan, seconded by Judi Cosgrove, the bureau voted (9-0-0) to accept the sub-committee reports as given.
ADJOURNMENT
ON A MOTION BY David Bourque, seconded by Michael Garcia, the bureau voted (9-0-0) to adjourn at 4:00 p.m.
The next scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 4:00 p.m.
