REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF LAST MEETING’S MINUTES

ON A MOTION BY Michael Garcia, seconded by AnneMarie Cox, the Board voted (6-0-1) to accept the minutes of March 9, 2011 as written.  Because she was not at the March meeting, Lisa Venn abstained from voting.

GRANBY PREVENTION COUNCIL UPDATE:

  • The committee will define the role of each committee so it’s clear for new members.
  • A logo was created and will go to the Town Manager for approval.
  • The Drug-Free Community Grant was submitted and a decision will be made in July.
YOUTH COUNSELOR REPORT:

AnneMarie Cox gave the following report:

  • Referrals have been coming in at about two per week since January.
  • The YAC 6th grade dance was very successful.
  • The Guys Only group is up and running and so far, the feedback is very positive.  The group consists of a diverse group of ten 6th and 7th graders.  This week they will be at Holcomb Farm for capture the flag.
  • AnneMarie Cox and Scott MacDonald held a Youth Coalition yesterday at Holcomb Farm.  It consisted of eleven students from 5th to 8th grade who all are involved in different youth groups in town.
  • The pasta dinner portion of Granby Stands Up To Cancer will be managed by Youth Services.
  • Kids Play ‘N Stay averages 15 to 25 kids per week with 12 or more adults present.  Miss Fern will come on April 27th and hold a movement and music class.  The group will be held in the park during the months of May and June and will come back to the Youth Services Building in July and August.
  • The MADD presentation was held on April 17th and there were 14 parents in attendance.
  • The 8th Grade Leadership Day will be held on May 27th.
  • A joint GCP/YSB event will be held on June 9th:  Narcotics in CT – What Granby Families Need to Know.
  • Celebrate Granby is on June 11th.  As a table costs $195, the YSB may go in with another group, i.e. GPC, etc.
YOUTH ACTION COUNCIL REPORT:

  • Because there was not a YAC representative present, no report was given.
OLD BUSINESS:

SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Asset Management:

  • Michael Garcia stated they went to the Middle School to speak to the school Social Worker, Emily Boone, and Scott MacDonald regarding the cultural competency asset.  Families of sixth and seventh graders will be identified to be interviewed by the end of the school year so the program can begin in the fall.
Marketing & Publicity:

  • Because there was not a representative from the sub-committee present, no report was given.
Development, Membership & Governance:

  • The group began developing a draft calendar of events that could be a means for the YSB to promote itself in the community.  The calendar was reviewed:
  • Shirley Ryan will make an announcement at the Women’s Breakfast requesting volunteers to assist cooking for the pasta dinner portion of Granby Stands Up to Cancer.
  • Donna Snyder also distributed a sign-up sheet for members of the YSB to help at Granby Stands Up to Cancer which will be held on May 7th.   The list will be distributed with the minutes so those members not in attendance can sign up to help.
  • The Board may want to assist with the drug awareness event on June 9th (Narcotics in CT), i.e. marketing, etc.
  • If the YSB has a table at Celebrate Granby, the golf balls could be sold.
  • There was a discussion regarding holding the Grandparents Breakfast again.
  • Race to Nowhere will be shown on May 31st at the high school.  It is a film that addresses how overloaded kids are, i.e. stress of AP classes, etc.  The Granby Drummer is sponsoring this and there will be a panel discussion after the movie.  The Drummer is hoping this will lead to a series of discussions in the fall.   Anne Marie and Donna Snyder are sitting on the panel and they are looking for a student to join them.
  • Other committees should reply with suggestions for the calendar.
  • It was noted that youth involvement on committees is weak and that youth involvement was also the weakest part of the drug-free community grant.
  • The committee has discussed holding a membership drive before October in order to get youth members.  Donna Snyder will talk to Scott MacDonald about having a table at the Open House in the fall.  The YSB may also want to consider holding the September meeting at the middle school.
  • It was also noted that committee members don’t need to be a Board member.

The next scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 4:00 p.m.
