APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 1/12/09:

The minutes of 1/12/09 were reviewed.  ON A MOTION by Sue Sojka, seconded by Linda Pollock, the minutes of 1/12/09 were approved as written.

YOUTH COUNCIL REPORT:

In Ms. Helander’s absence, Ms. Kielbasa gave the following report:

  • Interns:  Karen LaForge has completed her 500 hours and has moved on.  Kim Waltman is a full-time intern and will finish in May.  Grace Talaga is presently doing a practicum.  She will start her internship in the summer and will be with us through the following school year.  Everyone is booked and there is a small waiting list.
  • WOW has 26 girls enrolled in the program.
  • Adventures in Living (AIL), the intergenerational program, will start again on March 2 and run for six weeks.
  • BOW continues on Friday nights and has approximately six middle school boys in attendance.
  • The library is starting a new group for girls in 4th, 5th and 6th grade beginning on March 9th.
  • Interviews for next year’s interns will be held on February 23rd.  There are six applicants (two from St. Joe’s, two from Springfield College and two from Central).
  • Ingrid is on the CASAC Board.  The regional meeting was held here last month and only six people attended.
  • The Grandparents Group continues to meet and is doing very well.  It is funded through the NCAAA and they will be coming out on March 5th to do a site visit.
  • There is a new support group for parents of children with special needs.  It is run by April Jones and Sue Weber and is held every other Monday.

YAC REPORT:

Sarah Miltenberger gave the following report:

  • There will be a 6th grade dance at the end of March.  Proceeds will benefit a family in town that has a seventh grader who suffers from a chronic illness that has resulted in three brain surgeries.
  • The group is looking into ways to raise money toward the possible creation of sidewalks along Route189 to the high school.
ON A MOTION by Lisa Venn, seconded by Shirley Ryan, all of the reports were accepted as given.

OLD BUSINESS

  • SEARCH Institute survey results are not in.  They should be mailed by the middle or end of next week.
NEW BUSINESS

  • The Grandparent/Grandchild Breakfast will be held on April 22nd at 9:00 a.m.  Flyers go out to the elementary schools and it is also advertised in the Drummer.  This is a YSB event, not a Senior Center event, and individuals are needed to help.  Sue Accetura volunteered to help with the food and Shirley will contact Theresa Whitaker, a storyteller and musician, about providing the entertainment.   It was suggested to have balloons in the entranceway.    Linda Pollock recommended someone take pictures of the kids for them to take home.  Sue Sojka will get paper for the tables that will also serve as tablecloths and crayons will be provided for the kids to color.   It was also suggested to have a basket of books as a centerpiece and the kids can take a book with them.   Lisa Venn will call Scot Haney to see if this is an event Better Connecticut might be interested in.   It was also suggested having GCTV videotape the event.
  • Sue Accetura suggested creating a website that would list resources and activities in town.    It would be free for listings of events for Town departments (Youth Services, Parks & Recreation, etc.) and would be fee-based for businesses and for-profits.  Kerry explained about the possibility of creating a community calendar on the Town website and we may be able to add a link to this new website.
  • CASAC is in jeopardy of losing funding under the new budget.  Kerry and Ingrid sent letters of support.  DMHAS is trying to pull away from regional action councils.  This would be a loss of $2,400.  Sue Accetura reported that the Granby Education Council has money for mini-grants and the deadline for applications is March 15th.
  • Sarah reported that she is on a youth forum with John Larson’s office and they will be looking to pass a bill.   She inquired if this group had any suggestions.  It was decided to look at this again once we have the results from the Search Institute survey.
ADJOURNMENT

ON A MOTION by Lisa Venn and seconded by Kyle Venn, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Senior Center/Youth Services Building.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
