APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 2/11/09:

YAC REPORT:
- YAC will hold a sixth-grade dance on April 3, 2009 to benefit Jessica Erickson, a Middle School student who has geniculate neuralgia.
- The group has begun discussing their campaign (Granby Afoot) for additional sidewalks in town, particularly on Rte. 189 to the high school. They will be asking area businesses to donate money and will be discussing fundraising ideas. Ms. Baber suggested the Board put this on the agenda at a future date to endorse this initiative.
YOUTH COUNCIL REPORT:
- Ms. Helander reported that eight prospective interns were interviewed and an additional eight have called inquiring about internships. A position was offered to two gentlemen from St. Joe’s. This will even out the team with three men and three women.
- The staff is very busy right now and at least one referral a day is coming in. Presently, the economy has a lot of impact on behavior.
- The intergenerational program (Adventures in Living) has started. This program is with seniors and 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Approximately 18 students sent in a registration form but the program can only accommodate 14.
- The WOW program will end the second week in April. The group went ice skating a few weeks ago and Maggie Burnett came in last week to do collages with the girls. Rebecca Lobo is coming to speak tomorrow night.
- One of the interns spoke at a class at CCSU to talk about her work through the school system and teaching families how to work with the schools.
ON A MOTION by Lisa Venn, seconded by Shirley Ryan, all of the reports were accepted as given.
OLD BUSINESS
Grandparent/Grandchild Breakfast:
- The breakfast is April 22nd at 9:00 a.m.
- Sandy has hired Les Julian a children’s singer/entertainer. Shirley Ryan had spoken to Theresa Whitaker, a storyteller, who was already booked for that date. She is very interested in doing this next year.
- Sue Sojka will get the books and butcher paper for the tables.
- Lisa Venn will get flowers and vases for the centerpieces.
- The flyers will go out to the schools within the next few weeks.
SEARCH Institute Survey Results:
- The results came in late Monday and it is over 100 pages long. Due to copyright laws, not everything can be copied. Ms. Kielbasa did distribute the Executive Summary. Board members were asked to go through it and come back with questions for next month’s meeting. If you have any questions, you can e-mail them to Ms. Kielbasa and she will pass them on to the SEARCH Institute.
- Approximately 1,003 kids were surveyed and 2% of those surveys were thrown out due to validity issues.
- Ms. Kielbasa will contact the CT Asset Network to see if they could provide a training on how this can be presented to the community.
NEW BUSINESS
Ms. Kielbasa applied for a grant through the Granby Education Foundation to offer an African drumming program. It is a six-week program for middle schoolers and seniors.
