YOUTH COUNSELOR REPORT:

In Ms. Helander's absence, Ms. Kielbasa gave the following report:

  • Most of the Youth Service programs are up and running, including Women on the Way (WOW) and Boys Only Weeknight (BOW).
  • Adventures in Living, an intergenerational program, is presently running and is very successful.
  • There was a group proposed for ninth and tenth grade boys which is not running as it did not generate enough interest.
  • Sue Sojka, Scott MacDonald and Ingrid Helander held a meeting for middle school youth who were involved in the Middle School Student Union and are interested in continuing with a group that would be similar to YAC.
  • There was also a proposed support group for youth in recovery from substance abuse which has not yet begun.
YOUTH ACTION COUNCIL REPORT:

Evan McCarthy gave the following report

  • This past weekend YAC supported the Granby Stands Up for Cancer event which was held at the high school and was organized by three students for their senior project.
  • The group is beginning their program 'Granby Afoot', which promotes putting more sidewalks in town.  They will begin selling t-shirts and the order forms will go to the schools to hand out.
  • The sixth grade dance will be held in December but a date has not yet been selected.
OLD BUSINESS:

The public forum was held Monday night regarding the results of the Search Institute Survey which was conducted last November.  John Daviau gave the presentation and he is on standby to help with the strategic planning process.  He proposed the Bureau submit a grant application regarding prevention.  It would cost $4,000 for this endeavor.

There was a discussion regarding next steps that need to be taken.

  • The flyer, which gives all 40 assets and results for Granby, is almost print-ready.  This will be completed, sent to print and given to The Drummer to add to the December issue.
  • ON A MOTION by Lisa Reinhardt, seconded by Lisa Venn, the Commission voted (9-0-0) to submit an open letter to the Editor of the Drummer, which will be a call to action and a request for funds.  Lisa Reinhardt and Donna Snyder will compose the letter for all Bureau members to sign.  It was suggested this letter also be e-mailed to the parents who attended the forum to show them the Bureau is moving forward.
  • Becca Polglase will contact Dave Russell of the Granby Community Fund regarding attending their meeting Thursday in order to discuss the goal for a drug-free community and also present them with a letter requesting financial assistance to move forward.
  • Donna Snyder and Lisa Reinhardt will compose a letter to send to The Rotary asking for financial assistance.
  • Evan McCarthy suggested YAC hold a third dance this year.
  • As mentioned earlier in our meetings with John, Bureau members need to start meeting with groups to talk about strategies that will build assets.    Whenever there is a presentation, it is important that as many members as possible need be present.
  • Ms. Kielbasa stated the need to establish a Local Prevention Council (LPC).  This was brought up at the last Granby Round Table meeting and many of the members were interested in joining as a parent coalition.  The next meeting of the Round Table could be brief and then roll into the initial LPC meeting.  Jack Cashman and Tina Barrow expressed their interest in joining the LPC.
ON A MOTION BY Sue Sojka, seconded by Donna Snyder, the Bureau voted (9-0-0) to hold a meeting on December 9, 2009 at 4:00 .m.

ADJOURNMENT:

ON A MOTION BY Jack Cashman, seconded by Donna Snyder, the Bureau voted (9-0-0) to adjourn the meeting at 5:27 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kane
