Program Highlights
The Senior Center will be closed on Monday, May 26 in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday.


Cancellation Policy:  All Senior Center activities and transportation services will be cancelled whenever the Granby Public Schools are cancelled.  The Town of Granby further reserves the right to cancel programs in the event of inclement weather.

Ambassador Program:  We are here to help
Ever wonder what we do at the Senior Center?  Would you come to the Senior Center activities if you had someone to come with?  Would you like a visitor or an occasional phone call?

Our Ambassador Program is just what you may be looking for.  Ambassadors are ready to help you find answers to your questions, meet you at the Center, or give you a call to see how you're doing.  They have the 'gift of gab', have great connections to services and know everything about what you can find at the Senior Center.  Call 844-5352 to get connected.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

GMHS Culinary Arts Senior Appreciation Luncheon:  Thursday, May 15 at 11:30 a.m.
The students of the High School Culinary Arts program host this annual luncheon at the High School.  This year's menu includes Chicken Francese, green beans almondine, home-made rolls and chocolate cream pie.  Cost:  $2, payable at the door.  Senior van service available.

Annual Veteran's Luncheon:  Wednesday, May 21 at 12:00 p.m.
All Granby Veterans are invited to lunch as appreciation for the service given.  Veterans are free, guests admitted for $4.

Strawberry Luncheon:  Friday, June 27 at noon
Spend a summer afternoon with friends enjoying sandwiches, salads and strawberry shortcake.  Cost:  $6, includes lunch and entertainment

May is Stroke Awareness Month.  The nurses will have additional information on what to watch for during the clinic.  Blood pressure clinic from 1-2 p.m.  Foot care clinic and ear irrigation will also be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For foot care and and ear irrigation appointments (fee applies), call 653-5514.  For van transportation, call the Senior Center at 844-5353 by noon the previous Monday.

Chair Massage:  Tuesday, May 20 and June 3 & 17 from 10:00 - noon by appointment
Provided by Bev Harris of Back in Touch.  15-minute chair massage.  For an appointment, call 844-5852.  Cost $10.

Hearing Screening:  Wednesday, May 14
Dr. Joy Guay of the Hearing Center of Enfield will give hearing tests and also check hearing aids.  Appointments beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Call 844-5352 to schedule an appointment.

The 8-hour course is designed to help you:  reduce your traffic violations, avoid crashes and chances for injuries.  Drive more safety.  Participants may be eligible for an insurance discount.  Cost:  $10, payable to instructor

Grandparents Support Group with Ingrid Helander, LMFT, Youth Service Counselor:  Thursdays from noon to 1:00 p.m.
This group is for grandparents who find themselves helping to raise children for the second or third time.   Bring a bag lunch and join others like yourself to share friendships, ideas and tips on being a parent again.  Call 844-5355 for additional information.

Hair Cuts in your Home - Call Caroline Ericksen of North Granby at 844-8721.

Checks and Balances -  Aurelle Locke, retired tax attorney, will assist you in balancing your checkbook at the Senior Center.  Call 844-5352 to make an appointment.

Handicapped Parking Permits - Available in the office.  Form must be signed by a physician and returned to DMV.

Meals on Wheels - McLean Home provides meals for ill, homebound, or disabled persons.  Delivered by volunteers 5 days a week.  Call 653-3700.

TAP (Transportation Action Program) - This volunteer service provides rides for medical appointments.  TAP Line:  844-8859  Leave a message on voice mail.

Widows' Support Group:  Meets the 3rd Monday of the month, 12:00 p.m. at New England Pizza.  Call 844-5352 to be added to the call list.

CHOICES:
"One-stop shopping" information source for services available to older adults.   CHOICES provides information and assistance about Medicare and other related health insurance options including:  Original Medicare, Medicare Rx, Medicare Supplement Insurance, Medicaid, Medicare Managed Care, Prescription Drug Coverage and Long-Term Care Insurance.  Please call 844-5350 to set up an appointment with Anita Mandeville, CHOICES Counselor.

Adventure Club: This group is for those who enjoy the outdoors and trying something new.  

Great Greenway & Game Refuge Challenge:  The goal is to walk the entire Greenway and every trail in McLean by September 3.   Earn points for each completed section to earn a prize!  Each Tuesday meet at the Senior Center at 1:00 p.m. for the walk/hike of the week.  

Smith & Wesson Firearms Range:  Monday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m.
Receive safety instructions and then try your skill at a 22 pistol.  Cost:  $30.  Please call 844-5352 to learn more.

Kayaking on Big Pond, East Otis:  Monday, June 23 meeting at 9:00 a.m.

Orienteering:  Sunday, June 22 Crandall Park

Senior Club:  Thursday, June 5 at 12:30 p.m.
The Senior Club is currently working on ways to raise funds to finance a new Senior van.  Get involved!  

BBQ at the Park:  June 20 at 12:30 p.m.
The Senior Club invites all to join them for hot dogs and hamburgers, summer salads and baked beans at Salmon Brook Park.  Cost:  $6, paid to Senior Club (Rain location:  the Senior Center)

Bingo:  Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 1:00 p.m.  Just for fun!  FREE


Monday Morning Coffee:  Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Drop in for a cup of coffee and friendly banter.  It is the place to get the latest on  Granby happenings!

Artists Group:  Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Do you have an interest in watercolors, drawing or painting?  Bring your materials and join artists during this friendly gathering.   Ideas and techniques are shared.



Needleworkers: Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm.  Knitting, cross stitching, crewel work and other needlework projects are worked on during this friendly gathering.   Enjoy a cup of coffee as you work on your latest project.

AT THE CENTER:

Community Cafe:  The Community Renewal Team (CRT) provides meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon at the Senior Center.  Suggested donation is $2. Call 844-5350 by noon on Friday to sign up for the following week.

Culinary Creations:  Wednesday, May 14 at 11:30 a.m.
Learn how to create delicious Spring-time soups including:  Asparagus and Baby Pea Potage; Chilled Carrot and Orange; and Chic Pea, Pasta and Rosemary.  Cost:  $4

Stamping Greeting Cards:   Thursday,  May 15 & June 12 at 9:30 a.m.   Come and create original cards using rubber stamps.  It's fun and requires no special skills! Space is limited.  Cost  $4.


Bowling Party with Wii:  Wednesday, June 18 at 1:00 p.m.
Have you heard of the latest video game technology?  It's sweeping Senior Centers across the country.  Come and join the latest craze!  Compete with friends for top honors and take home a medal.  Snacks included.  Bought to you by Healthnet, no charge

Setback:  Mondays at 1:00 p.m.  Come join in on a fun card game with good company. FREE.
