AHRENS PARK OPENS
A Dedication Ceremony was held on September 20th for the opening of Ahrens Park. The Park was purchased from the Ahrens Family in 2003. The Open Space Advisory Committee reviewed town land needs and open space opportunities creating a list of parcels for evaluation (July 19, 2001). The committee identified the Ahrens Farm property at 67 Hungary Road as an opportunity to preserve open space and to help meet the towns growing recreation needs. The property consists of 44 acres. Following the purchase park plans were developed by the landscape architect firm CR3. Several informational meetings from potential users were held during the planning stage.
Boards and residents met in January of 2004 to further discuss other town park and school field space needs. During the ceremony, First Selectman, John Adams thanked the community and Mr. William and Lois Ahrens for their cooperation in the transfer of the property to the town. In addition, Mr. Adams thanked the Public Works Department (James Klase, Superintendent of Public Works; and Kirk Severance, Public Works Foreman) for their efforts in establishing the playing fields now available for use.
Presently, the town has improved the park area and now has established a new location for community gardens, a baseball field, a soccer field, and a lacrosse field. In the near term other activities contemplated are a permanent bathroom facility and a pavilion.
