Becoming Part of a Solution

Hear What Kids in Grades 7-12 Have to Say…
Results from Search Institute Survey

The Town of Granby Youth Service Bureau in collaboration with the Granby Board of Education administered the Search Institute Survey of Student Resources and Assets to over 1,000 students in grades 7-12 in November 2008. This survey, funded by the Granby Community Fund, was anonymous and voluntary. The survey was conducted to assess the health of the youth in our community, collect data to identify the best way to target limited resources and apply for available funds, and to explore new partnerships between town, school and community resources in response to identified youth needs.

Over the past twenty years, Search Institute has surveyed nearly 3 million youth about how they experience the 40 Developmental Assets - a research based framework that identifies basic building blocks of human development of all youth, regardless of community size, geographic region, gender, economic status race or ethnicity.  The 40 Developmental Assets can be defined as external assets and internal assets.  External assets are positive developmental experiences that families, schools, neighborhoods, community groups, and other youth and family-serving organizations provide young people. Internal assets are positive commitments, skills and values that form a young person’s inner guidance system and that work together to help youth become healthy, independent and successful young adults.

The survey measured the 40 Developmental Assets, Indicators of Thriving, and Risk-Taking Behaviors.  In addition, the survey asked our youth how they spend their time, their perceptions of school and community life, and many health-related issues.

John Daviau, Professional Consultant, will present the results of the survey at the   Granby Forum on November 9, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Senior Center/Youth Services Building.  Please attend and become informed of the strengths and deficits our young people are experiencing, the programs and initiatives that build assets, and of how each and every one in the community can help our youth build assets. We believe that with thoughtful, intentional asset-building initiatives we can increase the number of assets and thriving indicators for our youth, while we decrease the number of youth engaging in risk-taking behaviors.  Join us in a shared vision and common purpose to create the positive conditions necessary to nurture healthy development in our community and most especially for our youth.
