Fishing Tips & Techniques
For girls & boys in grades 5–8
Classes will be held at the GMMS Ecology Center. This is a CT. DEP sponsored class run by Ed Calhoun and Sue Alender. Curriculum includes discussions and videos on tackle boxes, lures, tackles, rod & reel combos, casting, fisheries management, aquatic management, baits, outdoor ethics, cleaning the catch and identifying local fishing areas. The State provides the fishing poles (do NOT bring your own). A parent is required to remain during the class. Cost: $5 per student (adults do not pay). This class will be rescheduled at a later date; call us if you are interested.
Intro to Youth Wrestling Clinic
For Boys Grades 3 - 8
This is not the wild, "off the top rope" stuff you see on TV. This is an opportunity for youth (and parents) to gain an understanding and appreciation for the various wrestling styles - Freestyle, Greco- Roman and Folkstyle. Participants will be introduced to wrestling techniques, experience live wrestling and have fun learning about the world's oldest sport. Focus will be on learning moves, conditioning and stretching; no competition is involved. Instructors are Todd Crisostomo, GMHS head wrestling coach, and Jeff Levine, GMHS Assistant Coach, assisted by members of the wrestling teams. A parent is required to remain on site for each session.

In-Service Day Multi-Sport Camp
For Grades 1 - 6
Want your child to have fun on this Granby Schools Teacher In-service Day? Campers are grouped by age and ability and play basketball, soccer, floor hockey, and baseball (among other games) in a cooperative atmosphere that stresses fun over competition! Bring snack and water bottle; wear appropriate sports clothing and sneakers. All day campers should bring a lunch. Instructors are staff from All Pro Sports.

Horseback Riding Camps for 2008
For girls & boys ages 6 - 12
Walk trails, ride horses, feed animals, play games, make friends! These week-long sessions offer an opportunity for students to learn horsemanship through games and activities. Students will be divided into small groups for mounted and unmounted lessons. Maple View Farm is focused on safety and ensures this by maintaining a low counselor to student ratio.
What to wear/bring: a boot with a heel, long pants for riding, a water bottle, a sack lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, a swimsuit (for a dip in the brook), old shorts and sneakers for after riding (we will get dirty and everyone needs to wear footwear at all times), a towel, riding helmet (loaners are available), and your parent for the first day to fill out some forms. Riders will receive a Maple View Farm bag.

2008 Tiny Hawks Multi-Sports Camp
For girls & boys ages 3 - 4
This is an introductory program presented by Skyhawks to help young children fine-tune motor skills through various sport activities and games. The goal is to introduce general concepts and skills needed for sports and life: hand-eye coordination, teamwork, sportsmanship, foot-eye coordination, cooperation and balance. NO pressure - just fun for the young athletes to learn basics of soccer and basketball through age-appropriate unique games. Skyhawks staff is trained to meet the special needs of young children.
Parents must stay on-site. Participants should wear t-shirt/shorts/sweats/socks (i.e., appropriate clothing), sneakers and sunscreen (put on by parent). Shin guards are recommended.

This is an introductory program for young children to explore soccer, baseball & basketball. It is run by Skyhawks coaches trained to meet the special needs of young children, getting them off on the right foot as they take their first steps into athletics. There is no pressure, just lots of fun! Mini Hawk participants should bring shin guards, 2 snacks & water bottle and wear t-shirt/shorts/sweats/socks(i.e. appropriate clothing) and sunscreen. Teaching skills that last a lifetime. The Chris Corkum Baseball Program is geared to emphasize skill development. The child is carefully guided through selected skill activities and drills culminating in team play. Each child's strengths and weaknesses are evaluated so growth is an on-going process. Lecture and demonstrations by qualified instructors enhance this process to its fullest. Program includes: individual and small group instruction in fielding, throwing, hitting, pitching, base running, physical conditioning and game strategy, with discussion of rules and regulations.

2008 Skyhawks Co-Ed Lacrosse Camp
For boys & girls ages 7 - 14
Learn America's First Sport! Skills used in soccer,basketball, and hockey all come together in the unique game of lacrosse, one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. Lacrosse athletes will learn all the fundamental skills,including stick handling, cradling, passing, and shooting, in a non-checking environment. Athletes will test and improve these skills through game-speed drills and exercises. Every athlete will come away with a deep understanding of the game and its traditions.
All Participants should wear appropriate clothing with sneakers and bring 2 snacks, a water bottle, sunscreen and name on all personal belongings. In addition, all must have the following equipment: protective gloves, mouthpiece, helmet w/ full mask (boys only), protective eyewear (girls only), elbow pads and stick. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a merit award.

Bears' Basketball Clinics

Run by GMHS Coach Wally Hansen and coaching staff Vince Scacchitti & Russ Bombard, this clinic will concentrate on fundamentals and individual & team development as well as foster self-confidence in a fun atmosphere. Conditioning, drills, stations, team & individual competitions will stress the fundamentals of ball handling, shooting, defense & rebounding. Awards ceremony at last session will recognize contest & championship winners. Participants are to bring a ball (put your name on it!) and wear sneakers, shorts & T-shirts.

2008 Archery Lessons
For girls & boys ages 8 - 18
Designed for beginning to intermediate archer in mind. This 5-day program with instructors from Sagittarian Archery School will take students through a step-by-step explanation of proper shooting technique. Students will enjoy an hour of shooting with instruction by a certified level 2 coach and national archery champion. Equipment will be provided. Topics covered will include range safety, proper shooting form, equipment selection, aiming, and sight adjustment. Students will also have an opportunity to shoot for score and earn Jr. Olympic Archery Development awards.

This program will challenge all players to improve and progress at their own comfortable rate of learning. The camp curriculum includes progressive skill training, individual stick skills, ground balls, cradling, padding & receiving, cutting & checking, shooting & offense, slow & fast breaks, defensive skills as a team & individual, special fun interactive activities, adaptive lacrosse, small-sided games and more. Academy International will provide weeklong instruction, player evaluation, t-shirt, award and a family presentation. Families hosting a coach receive a $75 rebate.

2008 Skyhawks SNAG Golf Camp
For Girls & Boys Ages 5-8
A program that is on par for the fundamentals! Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes through training in proper technique and foundational skills. Golf is a challenging and lifelong sport, so young athletes need proper focus on the essentials of a good swing, putting, and body positioning. To assist in this training, Skyhawks has adopted the SNAG ( Starting New At Golf ) technology to its curriculum. SNAG utilizes a set of equipment designed for beginning golfers, including oversized plastic club heads and "mini-tennis balls" to help build confidence. Holes are constructed with preset tee boxes or launching pads and are finished off with Velcro targets for greens. This program is perfect for developing a love for the game of golf! MLS Soccer Camp
For girls & boys ages 5 - 18
Players of all ages & soccer abilities will benefit from this unique, child-centered curriculum developed by Dr. Gary Russell of the UK. The coaching staff consists of talented, licensed & fully trained men & women who run clinics year-round. All coaches are required to attend numerous training days throughout the year when they are trained in all aspects of coaching, interaction & communication. To ensure the maximum safety of all campers, MLS also requires that all coaches are 1st aid trained & undergo thorough, third party background checks.
For ages 5 - 11, the program goals are soccer awareness, fun & education.
For the 9 - 18 year olds, the focus is attitude, training, techniques, awareness, competition and knowledge.
If you are willing to host a coach at your home for the week, please contact the Recreation office. You will receive a 50% discount for one child.

Summer 2008 Softball Clinics
For girls ages 7 - 11
Come learn the basic fundamentals of pitching and catching from George Perlotto, a thirty-year veteran of fast pitch softball who has played and pitched at national, regional and state ASA levels. This clinic is designed for beginning pitchers and catchers, who are looking to learn fundamental approaches that will last them a lifetime.
All participants must bring gloves and wear cleats. Catchers should bring gear if they have or can borrow it. A parent or designated helper should remain to assist pitchers by catching.

Challenger Soccer Camp 2008
For girls and boys ages 4 -14
The number one youth soccer company in the United States, Challenger Sports, has teamed up with Granby Recreation to hold one of their nationwide week long British Soccer training camps right here in Granby, CT. Each child will be coached by a member of Challenger’s British coaching staff flown to the US exclusively to work on these programs. This camp is just one of 250 that Challenger Sports are running in New England with 1800 camps in the US and Canada for a record breaking 80,000 boys and girls of all ages.
“The Challenger Way” focuses on challenging players to improve with maximum participation, maximum touches on the ball, and maximum fun. Simply put, no line drills, no long speeches and lots of encouragement. Challenger has separate levels of instruction based upon ages and ability. Each one will include: individual foot skills, technical drills, small sided games, and coached scrimmages.
Campers receive a free soccer ball, camp t-shirt and a handwritten coaches evaluation as part of the camp package. Indicate shirt size and ball size on registration form.

2008 Kangaroo Field Hockey Clinic
For girls grades 9 — 12
The Kangaroo Field Hockey Clinic is designed for the improvement not only of the player but the entire team. There will be individual skill sessions with instruction geared toward team development in preparation for the upcoming season. Goalkeepers will receive one-on-one instruction on the fundamental skills and techniques necessary to play this specialized position. Clinic Director is Australian David Mike who coaches both men and women in Premier leagues in Sydney. He has coached teams to seven indoor and outdoor National Championships as coach of the NSW State team. He was also a play-by-play commentator in the Sydney Olympic Games. He has directed USA camps for the past seven summers including those at UCONN and Springfield College.

Tiger Golf Camp for 2008
For boys & girls 7 - 10
For all skill levels. Tiger Golf Camps are a shortened version of the Junior Golf Camp but geared especially for ages 7 - 10. All facets of the game will be addressed and there will be an opportunity to go on the golf course the last day. Part of each morning is spent working on swing fundamentals and practice on the range; the remaining time is spent on aspects of the short game (putting, chipping, pitching and bunker) through skill building games and contests. Fee includes daily lunch and any greens fees. Must provide your own equipment or rentals are available directly from Copper Hill.
